Marcus Trescothick calls time on England career

Trescothick retires from international cricket

Cricinfo staff

March 22, 2008

Marcus Trescothick, the England and Somerset batsman, has announced his
retirement from international cricket. Having suffered from a
stress-related illness since 2006 Trescothick, 32, doesn't feel able to
return to the high-pressure world of international cricket.

"I have tried on numerous occasions to make it back to the international
stage and it has proved a lot more difficult than I expected," he told
the Somerset website. "I want to extend my playing career for as long as
possible and I no longer want to put myself through the questions and
demands that go with trying to return to the England team."

  [ENG-NZ T3] What the F*"!

Author: Luke Curtis
Date: Mar 22, 2008 22:47

I go to be at lunch *incredibly* disappointed, NZ are scoring at 10
runs an over, How and Fleming are set and a large, if not huge NZ lead
looks an inevitability.

When I wake up, scared to go down stairs because I *really* don't want
to be depressed by the bad news I find that in 2 sessions we have
taken 9 wickets, scored 91 runs and lost 2 wickets and already have
set NZ more to win in the second innings than they scored in the
first!!!!

I simply cannot believe that a team when which performed *so* badly
can suddenly perform so well in the space of a lunch break - Peter
Moores must *really* have earnt his wages and then some!

To state the blindingly obvious Sidebottoms 7/47 will go down as a
pretty special bowling performance.

According to Alan Gibson, in a 1967 appreciation in /The Times/, Colin
Blythe "seemed an improbable soldier". Sir Home Gordon is quoted as
saying, "How he ever passed the medical examination must be dubious."

  Trescothick ends England career..

"...Marcus Trescothick has announced his retirement from international
cricket. The 32-year-old has been suffering from a stress-related
illness which makes travelling abroad difficult...".

Interesting that Trecothick receives much sympathy for his travelling
abroad problems, yet Harmison is much maligned for the similar
offence...

Cheers
