  Day four

Author: Mike Holmans

Today was a good day's Test cricket. Unfortunately, because it was a
good contest today, it's quite likely that tomorrow won't be. Unless
England take a lot of wickets quickly, NZ will be able to bat out time
until the target is way beyond reach, and that will be a draw.

Any day's Test cricket which features a Vaughan century is going to be
pretty good, whatever the state of the game. I've said it before and
I'll no doubt say it again, but watching Vaughan bat well is my
favourite sight in cricket (watching Mahela Jayawardene comes second).
He was only firing on about three cylinders for the first forty or so
runs, but thereafter it was vintage stuff, two exquisite late cuts off
Vettori being the highlights for me. And of course it puts to bed all
the murmuring about how he hasn't been getting enough runs to justify
his place, which will make life a lot stabler in the team bubble.

At the start of play today

All the talk on Sky was about how much England would put on and whether
they'd be able to force the win. Not a sniff of whether NZ would battle
back with a few wickets, which I find quite arrogant. Hats off to Martin
and Vettori with the score at 208/6 (from 148/1). Poor stuff from Pietersen
and Ambrose. Collingwood looks in scratchy form at best.

Choosing VB Blue Over Baggy Green Justified?

Author: sunnyscoop

From Cricketlogic.blogspot.com

For any cricketer, Test cricket is the ultimate. And, so is the
feeling of wearing your country's Test cap. Perhaps, that explains the
outrage of former players, and also fans, when Cricket Australia made
Ricky Ponting's team wear blue caps emblazoned with its sponsor VB
beer logo instead of the traditional baggy green in a match against a
Jamaican XI team.

"Money talks," said former Australian Test cricketer Greg Matthews to
an Australian publication. He added: "You're selling your pride,
selling the baggy green. It just cheapens things. If someone said to
me I had to wear a VB hat, I'd tell them to piss off."

According to Cricketlogic.blogspot.com, Cricket Australia was taken
aback by the backlash and immediately issued a media release,
clarifying the circumstances. "Brad Haddin, who has not yet been
selected...

Author: Mike Holmans

In honour of Brendon McCullum being out at Lord's in the nineties in
two successive innings, here's a quiz revolving around Test match 90s.
(It is not guaranteed that all the answers to the questions below will
be correct if there are any further 90s in the Test now in progress at
Lord's.)

1 Three players have not out 90s as their Test career bests. Identify
them:

99* ___________ Eng v NZ Edgbaston 1999
98* ___________ Eng v Pak Lahore 1977-78
91* ___________ Pak v Eng Edgbaston 1987

2 Seven players have been out twice on 99:

___________ Eng v SA Lord's 1960, v Pak Lahore 1961-62
___________ Pak v Eng Headingley 1987, v SA Jo'burg 1993-94
___________ NZ v Aus MCG 1987-88, v Eng Christchurch 1991-92

  Umpire question - The boundary

Author:

On big grounds in sponsered matches there is the little triangle thing
with the logo covering the rope. If those little tringle segments have
been disturbed during matches and are "within" the field of play, then
what happens if the ball would roll to a stop against one. Say 2
inches from the rope?
