Child Protection: CRB, ISA, POCA, etc

Author: GAGS
Date: Feb 28, 2008 14:08

So here we go again with another agency addition to the seemingly
never-ending, almost suffocating, raft of child protection measures.
The ISA; uniting various methods and procedures and improving the
safeguarding of children in a simple easy way. Rubbish! Adding another
agency in the pipeline isn't going to simplify things. Since when has
Government and its agencies ever made things simpler by adding yet
another level of government or another agency?

Anyone who's been in scouting for the past say 10 years or more will
have seen lots of changes, but nevetheless scouting has essentially
continued largely unchanged in many respects. But one aspect where
Leaders clearly have seen changes is child protection. And how do you
sense the atmosphere has changed during this time? Do you feel many
more people now are watching for or fearing the paedo who is hanging
out on the street corner? Has fear of an attack by an unsuitable
person on your yp increased? Is this fear realistic?

"Programme Plus" publication - Are we being conned?

Author: Jim
Date: Feb 28, 2008 11:56

I have just purchased a copy of the Unit Programme Plus publication,
looking for a big list of new ideas.

...and all I find is a reprint of about 40 items from Programmes On
Line.

I'm feeling somewhat conned, in that you are paying £5 for the
privilege of having the POL records printed and bound. As far as I'm
concerned, it's £5 down the drain.

Has anyone else found the same with the other sections' publications?

I accept that there are some leaders without Internet Access, so
perhaps the publication has a place, but miffed that this has not been
even hinted at in the publicity.

  All Cornwall Form Ws Cancelled!!!

Author: Knowlege is Powder

I have just heard today that all members of Cornwall Scouts that hold
a form W have been cancelled.

This is due to the new rules for the Activity permit, and changes to
the BCS scheme (Wonders whether non canoists have been affected too?)

Im am whole heartedly fed up with what Cornwall are doing with regards
to activity permits and the like, surely the old form w scheme
survives until the permit expres or is replaced with the new scheme.

I have therfore decided not to pursue with gaining any Activity permit
as I basically cannot trust them to look after me or the scheme in a
proper and professional mannner, Im also considering writing to HQ
(again) but i think this will be a waste of time.

I may still consider getting the WGL qualification but it will be for
my own personal benefit and wont be for Scouting reasons.

Do ASL's have an traditional names

I was never in the Scouts until joining as a Leader and so when my
assistants asked if they had any traditional names I was set to
wondering..??

I have read about the traditional names used for cub/beaver leaders -
but do assistant Scout leaders have any traditional names - please
note the use of traditional as opposed to things you actually do call
each other ..!

  Accommodation in York

Author: Simon Cook
Date: Feb 25, 2008 13:33

Hi Everyone

Thanks for the help on accommodation for our Sixers weekend earlier this
year.

I am afraid I'm on the scrounge again!!

We are bringing 14 cubs and 3 adults to York for Easter Weekend (from Good
Friday to Easter Monday inclusive).

At the moment, we have looked at Camp Tamarak at Selby which is an excellent
site and has the indoor accommodation we are looking for, but access can be
a bit awkward.

I've also made enquiries with the York Scout Activity Centre which looks
excellent but is a bit expensive as it is aimed at near 40 people.

So, we are basically after sleeping accommodation for 14 children and 3
adults, as near to York as possible. We will only be using the facilities
for washing etc, cooking breakfast and sleeping. The rest of the time we
will be out and about. Does anyone have any places they know about that
would be good to try?

I've also been on the YHA site, but they're looking at £15 per night per
person!!

Many thanks for everyone's help in advance.

Given the recent discussions about religion it was interesting this
morning that interviewing Julie Felix.

Julie Felix tried to explain her Paganism and how it linked with
nature and ancient traditions and religions and how when God was put
up in the sky we lost contact with our spirituality.

Aled immediately responded with a yes but you must agree that God
created all this.

Julie Felix gave her response trying to avoid a clash, and Aled took
it that she was in total agreeing with him - which was not quite what
she was saying.

I'm with Julie Felix.
