The question about suitable footwear when using axes came into
discussion amongst the Unit leaders last week.
Historically, we were all taught that heavy leather boots were the
order of the day whenever an axe was around.
That was in the day when leather was both heavy duty and the only boot
material, but few modern boots are "classic" leather (particularly the
cheaper ones) so offer no more protection than a standard pair of
trainers.
Looking at hand axes to start with, I would have thought that the risk
of hitting a foot, as opposed to any other part of the lower (and even
upper) leg was no greater, so trainers would be sufficient.
Felling axes are a different risk because of the swing and force used,
but again if the axe swings past the log it's more likely to go into
your shin than foot. Sideways cutting makes footwear almost
irrelevant!
The only axe injury I've ever seen in 30 years was a hand axe hitting
the top of the hand (fortunately didn't do any lasting damage).
