 Up
... and then they all come at once!

You wait an hour for a bus and then they all come at once!
So there I was, 2 Friday's ago about to tell the scouts that we couldn't go
to District Scout camp because there was no other Leader to go with me. I
have 2 valuable YL's about to go-off on gap years and my ASL leaving to
start teacher training.... I could see the troop folding.....
and I look up and see a man and a woman standing just inside the door....
A huge man, with a massive smile, said that he was 'Rod' , a scoutleader
from Brazil and had been sent to help me! He had arrived in England that
week, to study for a year, immediately rang HQ and been directed to us, he
was living in the same street! I asked him what he was doing Bank Holiday,
gave him some boots and a coat, and as a result we had a great camp, his
strength skills and ability to work with kids were both superb!
Oh, and the woman had no connection, she had 'found' us on a local
volunteers website, we have been on it for 2 years without a single bite.
She had been a guide, had DofE gold and happily sat with the kids around a
fire cooking sausages, pitched tents and generally helped them prepare for
the camp.
In the middle of all of this, my head was spinning and in-walked an
ex-scout, not seen him for 15 years, said he had heard from his gran that we
needed help........ ...

  £99 laptop

Yes a laptop for £99.

OK so its not going to set the world alight, it has a small screen 12"? A
slowish CPU (300MHz) BUT it has NO moving parts, because it uses FLASH RAM
for its disk, runs off cells so you can buy extra batteries when you are
away, includes wireless connection to your home network and it runs Linux,
so no Microsoft tax!

However ASUS have one for only slightly more money that is even better!

At this price, size and potential reliability it could be the machine that
hi-tech leaders have been looking for. You could almost get one per patrol!

  Theme Park Camp 2008

Howdy folks!

Our techno-munchkins have been very busy, and the Theme Park Camp
website has been updated to tell you all about this years camp. To
summarise, it's 5th-7th September, open to Explorers, Network, and
SSAGO, and it's going to be great!

http://www.summitnetwork.org.uk/tpc

As you can see, we've got a little video which should give you a
pretty good flavour of the event. It can't recreate the magic of being
there in person though! And a few things were left on the cutting room
floor, like me doing karaoke, thankfully.

The weekend involves spending all day Saturday at Thorpe Park, home to
Nemesis:Inferno, Colossus, a 10-loop rollercoaster, Stealth, which
gets to 80mph in 2 seconds, and loads of other spinning/soggy rides.
Plus a nice quiet visit to the farm on the train. In the evenings, we
run discos, have a fancy dress night, bingo, karaoke, giant games,
camp fires, and usually an inflatable something too.
