I put my foot right in it an organised a weekend camp on my anniversary
(next weekend) but noticed in time and because I am home moved it from
Thursday Evening to Saturday morning, so I am home on Sunday ... phew..
except there are not activities open on site during Friday.
We have a night hike sorted for Thursday (until about 3AM) and so that's
going to be a 9/10 AM start, ie 11AM before we are ready to do anything and
a camp fire for Friday night, but we all sat there with blank looks.
There is no pioneering kit on site, we don't have transport and there is
nowhere easily local, we did a wide game a couple of weeks back, we did
backwoods cooking last week on unit night...
It pathetic but after all these years I can't think of a thing for them to
do that we haven't done in the past few weeks.

Hi all,
Any thoughts on tactics for helping a new young Scout overcome
persistent (all-day-long) feelings of homesickness, at camp (a short,
weekend camp)?
Tried:
- sympathy / chat / cheering-up talk
- keeping him busy (doesn't want to do anything, fun or chores)
- getting another Scout to take care of him / chat to him
- talking to other Scouts in his presence about how to cheer yourself
up, gently hinting to him he should pull himself together a bit.
His mum expected beforehand that there would be a problem (this
expectation may be part of the cause), and mostly we haven't had
problems with this in the past, so I'm inclined to think it's him
rather than something in our troop that's the problem.
Emotionally he's a bit less mature than average for his age, but not
way off the scale.
All tips welcome.
All the best.

"Thousands of shops, restaurants and cafés will be forced to register
their staff with a new child protection agency and have their criminal
records checked if they employ children for weekend or summer holiday
work.
Any staff responsible for supervising children under 16 will have to
be vetted. The measure is in the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act,
which was passed in 2006. It was originally intended to screen
teachers, nursery staff and youth workers more effectively by
requiring them to register with a new quango, the Independent
Safeguarding Authority (ISA), but ministers have decided to extend its
scope to businesses."
"The Manifesto Club is particularly concerned that sports and hobby
clubs will decide that it is easier to ban teen-agers than take the
trouble of registering members who occasionally or informally coach
young people."

My Adult Leader Training is complete!
Phew!
I was offered 2 interesting ways of completing it, which may both seem
rather radical: We could do it on four consecutive residential weekends, or
in one solid residential week. I chose the 4 residential weekends, although
a few people with heavy family commitments chose to slip home at nights.
Basically, we were divided into small teams of 6, working together for the
whole 4 weeks. Mornings and evenings were mostly lectures and discussions
with practical tasks in the afternoons. On the first afternoon each group
set-up a campsite where we cooked our evening meals, for many this was the
first time they had actually chopped wood and cooked on a wood-fire. In the
evening we reviewed the experience, looking at safety aspects for young
people, supervision etc. And then a wide game!
Sunday was Knots and Lashings, our group built a transporter bridge! We
learned about how ropes were made, different materials, how best to teach
and make knotting fun and useful. Would you believe, these campsites were
left standing for 3 weeks and we cooked our meals and ate our meals in them,
like families. Over 6 days the Leader of each team moved, giving us all a
chance to be a 'PL' and there was much rivalry between teams (or Patrols).
Subsequent weekends covered different types of lamps, stoves, fuels, safety, ...
