  New to scouting

Hello everyone, Im quite new to scouting and currently assisting with
both cubs and scouts in Plymouth. I have yet to be invested, my CRB
has yet to come back and my application is currently with our local
district commisioner. Things seem to be moving very slowly at the
moment, but I am enjoying every minute. I plan to train as an ASL
and occationally help out as an ACL. 9th and 21st are going for a 2
hour hike this thursday so im looking forward to that.

  Rules, Rules and 'rules'?

Author: Eddie Langdown

Following from te discussion on another thread about rules on where people
can sew badges...
I guess I'm a bit of free spirit as regards scouting...
and i have been 30 years in a district that feels like the back of beyond
where the writ of POR hardly seems to rule and we tend work on the premis
that 'if it feels good and gives kids and safe and exciting time then do
it'!

So, I wonder if there are 3 kinds of rules in scouting:
1. Things that are the law of the land and things that deal with child
safety;
Child protection, drugs, sex and alcohol, insurance issues, Health...

got to use it was a few weeks ago on a d of e expedition. it snowed a
little. thankfully noone was inside it at the time but the tent simply
collapsed. all 3 poles snapped and two went through the pole sleeves.

  Manor Neckers?

Author: Eddie Langdown

I have been waiting 4 months for a scarf order from Manor Neckers in
Birmingham. Lots of appologies; "not able to scource the materials" etc.
Suddenly not responding to emails or answering phone.
1. Anyone know if they are still trading?
2. Anyone tell me of the quickest scarf supplier in the UK?

I am deep shxx with the group, as we have about 10 kids now without scarves.
i saw akela take her own scarf-off last night at an investiture.

  Ideas needed

Author: Dave

I am struggling desparately trying to make Law & Promise interesting.

We keep getting new kids in - most from Cubs and somee off the street and
one of the Membership Award requirements is of course is to have an
understanding of the L&P.

Most of them can recite it parot fashion in a short space of time but really
struggle to show that they understand it.

I personally believe that it is something we do need to do - I know some
Leaders that are not that bothered.

I am struggling though coming up with ideas where they can show that they
have an understanding in a fun and lighthearted type of way. I can sit and
discuss it with them and basically most haven't got much of an idea (and it
is not fun).

I know that we can get news papers and magazines and get them to try to find
stories and pictures to depict the L&P (pro and against). I know that we
could get them to try and act it out (to do either of these they need to
have some understanding first though).

Any ideas - what do you do, are there any DVDs anything.

  Sleeping Distances

Author: Ash

I was at a Leaders Meeting last night and someone raised the point about the
distance a Leaders tent had to be away from a young persons tent and that
there was some type of rule.

Iv'e never heard of any rule, has anyone else?

  St George's Day

Author: Dave
Date: Apr 22, 2008 02:04

After being promised something special for the Centenary Year and ending up
doing exactly the same - walking through the back streets of a village with
no band to a Church and doing the same sort of thing that means you can
neither see nor hear what is happening so to the kids is boring (even those
that attend church every week), we as a Group decided to do something
different.

As a result we had a brilliant - if cold weekend at our District Campsite
where the Scouts attended from Friday night to Sunday, the Cubs Saturday
morning to Sunday and the Beavers all day Sunday.

Instead of about 12 on the parade we had over 80 people take part.

All sorts of fun activities and when asked all those who answered said they
want it again next year.

The only 'serious part' to the events was a couple of presentations, 2
Investitures and the renewal of Promises all of which which took less than
10 minutes in the middle of a field just before the closure of the event.

We are looking forward to offering something similar next year - this will
be our tradition from now on.
