From the outset I've wondered how the weekly programme could be called
Scouting in any meaningful way, seeing as just about everything that
is suggested in the zones or CSA requirements needs to be done over a
longer period of time.

This in turn makes the weekly meetings a social club with occasional
evenings for some of the CSA items.

  Data Security Views wanted

Hi all,

I used to post here regularly many years ago. Unfortunately my ISP
dropped Usenet so I have stopped reading the group. I recognise some
of the names from before (Ewan & Stephen)

Is anyone here a security expert or similar?

If you are I would like to ask for some help. I am working on a
program I have written to mange and store Scouts information. It’s
kind of what Scout Count promised to be. Eventually I want to make it
an open source program available complete with documentation etc, but
that’s for the future.

I have been using it successfully for a number of years but I need to
give other people in my group access to the information. It is quite
powerful having all the information nicely organised in one place but
I want to ensure we get data security right. I have done a little bit
or research myself and created an article describing issues and
concerns I have and how I plan to overcome them. (I have looked at the
fact sheets, some government information stuff and general security
info.)

When imposing the The 30 mins restriction, the SA are following what
is defined in regulation;

The Adventure Activities Licensing Regulations 2004

"trekking" means journeying on foot, horse or pedal cycle or ski-ing
over terrain-
(a) which is moorland or more than 600 metres above sea level; and
(b) from which it would take more than 30 minutes travelling time to
reach any accessible road or refuge;

We can all (probably) identify 'safe' bits of walking country that
just fall into T1, but equally there are bits of T0 which are well
beyond the remit of the average Scoutleader with no hillwalking or
serious navigation experience.

The requirement for a permit when more than 30 mins from the road does
make sense for a lot of areas around the 500M boundary and even more
so the further north you go.

  Atheism again (sorry!)

Hi all, I haven't posted here for a while, what with being a new Dad
and busy at work, but I have been lurking. Back in 2005, I posted the
following on this newsgroup, in a long thread about atheism :

"I honestly can't remember what I put last time I filled in a warrant
application, or what happened with it, but I'll find out soon, since
I'll be
applying for a new warrant when I move to Bristol. Watch this space!"

For those who've been watching that space, I did apply for a warrant
when I moved, and I did leave the religion box blank. A mere 22
months after filling in the form (which is the fastest of the five
that I've done), a shiny new membership card dropped through my door
this week. Well, actually, two identical ones dropped through the
door, with the wrong information on, but the point is that I have been
appointed as an AESL without having a faith of any kind.

It was questioned by Gilwell when the forms were submitted, and I
replied totally honestly, and quite robustly, that I neither had nor
needed a faith, and that I didn't see what that had to do with my
usefulness as a leader.

  Merry Christmas

Author: An Old Codger

I wanted to send some sort of holiday greeting to all my friends on UKRS,
but it's so difficult in today's world to know exactly what to say without
offending someone. So I met with my Lawyer and on his advice I wish to say
the following:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an
environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive,
gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced with
the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or secular practices
of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or
traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular
traditions at all.

I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically
uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar
year 2008, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other
cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our country great
and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability,
religious faith or sexual preference of the wished.

How do you appraoch an event like this with respect to Scout Activity
rules ?

A lot of Dartmoor would be Terrain 1 and possibly bits of Terrain 2
also.

For the actual event does someone in the team get issued with a permit
or are they remotly supervised by another permit holder ?
