Earlier this year I was offered voluntary redundancy, I got a rough quote
and it was more then I expected so I was tempted.

I was seriously considering becoming a teacher, which would mean a serious
drop in salary but the nice lady from the council said that as I was
qualified for physics, IT or Maths then I would qualify for a starting at a
higher rate than from fresh and that I would almost certainly get summer
school work if I wanted it. The fact that I was an ESL was just icing on
the cake and they claimed I could start immediately with only a week
shadowing another teacher and then got for it until the end of term and them
go to college one day a week to get teaching qualifications.

Yes they really are that desperate!

In the event I thought about it too long and they closed the offer, but its
coming up again and I wanted to know form any teachers here was did they
find that scouting was a conflict of interests? Too much extra work? Or no
different to any other job?

Yes but they are in Kent and I think we have hired the lot!

I found the best contact was the County Council events office, they had a
list of contractors and pointed me to the ones that they use most

I agree, with the myo you just press a button and get 20 seconds full beam.
If you need more than that then get a bigger torch.

Thats a good point, I only recnetly found out that lithium batteries are
not suitable for all torches, eg here is the advice from the Petzl website

http://en.petzl.com/petzl/LampesNews?News=159&Cadre=0
"Limitations on use of AA/LR6 and AAA/LR03 Lithium batteries with headlamps.

This information does not apply to the e+Lite which was designed to work
with CR2032 Lithium batteries.

Lithium batteries are lighter and give longer burn times at low temperature
than traditional Alkaline batteries.

Due to recent advances in the performance characteristics of Lithium
batteries (especially their higher output during discharge), they can cause
the lamp to overheat and possibly damage the LEDs.

Value doesn't come into it any more than a Lamborghini is poor value when
compared to a Mondeo :-)

As it happens my existing petzl has lasted years and years and years... so
have my maglites, and nothing else has even come close.

It was the Sun, grammar doesn't come into it so long as it has big tits.

  And the Turks-Head Woggle?

Author: Eddie Langdown

I am so out of date with training these days... I have seen Leaders being
presented with their 'Wood Badge Beads' ... but do leaders still get
presented with their leather Turks-head woggle on completion of some
preliminary stage?

( On achieving a 40%% score completing an on-line multiple-choice
questionnaire on risk assessment in collage-design perhaps? )

It's been my experience over the last ten years (that long!) that for every
one "gobby annoying little tosspot" who ever amounts to more than being a
"gobby annoying little tosspot" we lose a dozen decent kids who make
scouting fun.
Take the cubs Xmas party we ran last weeknd - a great time was had by all -
perhaps one of the most successful events we've run in a long time. The
reason why? - it would seem to be a unanimous feeling among the leaders that
it went as well as it did for no other reason that the two most "gobby
annoying little tosspots" weren't there.
