After much chatter from Paul and after being asked a POR question by a
member of this newsgroup, I note from rules 3.1c and 3.1d that we need to
determine whether or not a child who comes along is a "british subject"[1]
or not. [Because we need to seek the DCs permission to admit them if
not]....
Does anyone actually follow this really strange rule?
Mike
[1] according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_subject you need to be
a lawyer to work this one out... although it is mostly
A person who is:
(a) a British citizen, a British Overseas Territories citizen or a British
Overseas citizen; or
(b) a person who under the British Nationality Act 1981 is a British
subject; or
(c) a British protected person (within the meaning of that Act).

I can't get my newsgroup on outlook to work anymore. After receiving
message from virgin that they were closing the ntlworld version, they
gave new address to log to. But I can't get it work.
news.virginmedia.com
Any ideas what to do? I'm sorry is off target but trying to find info
via virgin is a joke. They haven't even bothered to update their
webpage, and I'm too tight to pay the rip off phone charges.
thanks
Amanda

Outdoors are selling Vango Beta 350 tents for £70, including a free cookset.
http://www.outdoors.co.uk/acatalog/1-3person-tents.html#a1024663
I bought one for myself, with the view that if they are any good I will buy
4 more for the unit to use on weekend camps. I used it for the first time
this weekend and this is how I found it.
1+ Pitching: three sets of poles coloured coded to fit an a pocket over
the tent, its outer first, which is my favourite. IT took 20 minutes, but I
had to read the manual before I realised about the colour coding system. I
could do it in 10 minutes now. It is easiest to insert the poles, peg out
the back corners, and then out in the pegs in the door frame, farthest away
from the back, which gives you a nice straight rectangle with the tapes and
everything else just falls into place after that.
2+ Size: its 3 man, but I only just had room lengthways, but at 6'2" I
suppose that's not too bad. There is a good 3" gap so its not a problem.
Nice big awning so three people should be comfy, 2 people would be OK for a
week and it is just right for me by myself for a weekend :-)

That was a weekend that makes it all worthwhile :-)
I only planned the camp a few weeks back as some of the 16/17 y/o wanted to
get away for the weekend but when I gave out the forms they didn't want to
go as it was the Radio 1 Concert just down the road, I offered to move it
but they ummed and ahhed so I said sod it lets just go.
In the end I only had the 13/14/15 year olds (12 of them) and they reckon it
was the best camp they ever had.
We had very limited transport so everything was taken to the minimum, one
lantern, one water container, 2 billies, one set of cooking tools, no
tables, chairs etc, apart from using double burner stoves it was almost
expedition conditions, and that really helped.
They made furniture by stacking pallets, and bits of wood, all without me
saying anything, they went for a ramble this morning, ran their own wide
game last night, tidied up, it was amazing, I managed to slide into the
background and only appeared at meal times to give the food and tell them
how to cook it.
There were no arguments, they shared out the work, and just got on with it,
they even went to be at 11PM each night without being told!!

We just did a stock-take and found that we have no scouts who came up
from cubs, and a group of 6 going up to Explorers only include 1
former cub.
Cubs meets Tuesdays in our hall; scouts meet Weds. This makes it a
little hard to get much exposure of scouts to the cubs.
I also found it hard, last time I tried, to get scouts to turn up to
cubs to run a meeting (but that was a long time ago!
GSL runs cubs, and keeps them till 11, by which time they've left. We
don't ever get any, even former cubs.
Any ideas, please?
I 'm thinking of starting a positive invitation to attend scouts
occasionally from 10th birthday onwards(like explorers do, e.g. a
birthday card with a note in it); we ASLs ans SLs going along to cubs
and running say 1 meeting per term.
(Background: We don't have any group cooperation at present -no
leaders meetings, cubs nad Beavers won't cooperate over our website)

On this NG there has often been info on camp kitchen supplies - but when you
need them you cannot find them.
As many of you know our HQ burnt down recently and we are currently in the
market for some catering gear of the type used in commercial kitchens and ex
military etc.
Please post shortcuts to your preferred supplier.
We have an oven - but are looking for 2 gallon pans with lids, large seving
spoons and strainer spoons, ladles, oven trays with lids etc.
We are also after plates, dishes, mugs of the plastic variety.
Thanks

We should think that God, who has given us Jesus Christ in order to
save us through Him, has nothing to do with the Evil.
God gave the life to the angel, who later rebelled against God
Himself, even if He got knowledge of the angel’s rebellion, because,
otherwise, it would be like to hide the hand within the sleeve.
These considerations, being already read by thousands of people all
over the world, will provide to solve a lot of doubts.

I've just answered a question for my latest university assigment, and I
used Dodge as the "system in focus" > no wonder it doesn't work it's
irrelevant!
Question 1
a)
Figure 1 shows the system in focus, this system is constructed and
lableled following the methodology of the Viable System Model ( VSM)
(Zimmer J, Chapman J 2004). This model describes five systems within the
model and I will address these ( where present) in turn.
Figure 1 The system in focus
System 1, the operations system is present , and is filled by four types
of sub systems , these are activities that the system in focus is
responsible for creating, ie events and the Explorer Scout unit...

I was somewhat dismayed to read the following in my District
newsletter:
"The Committee of the Council [of the Scout Association] has
decided that all adults should renew their Scouting disclosure at
least every five years..."
The arguments for and against repeated Disclosure are well
rehearsed here, so I won't bother repeating them, but can anyone
confirm or refute this statement? The Minutes of the Council
meetings aren't published on Scoutbase :-(
(Also sent to the Info Centre)
The situation is somewhat academic, as in October 2009 the new
process for registering with the Independant Safeguarding
Authority goes live. Also,my District will shortly be merged with
others - thus, as all Adults will have changed District, I
presume a new Disclosure will be needed...
