  R80RS

Author: Steve Parry
Date: Apr 28, 2008 15:00

Well ... swilled out and emptied the the tank on the R80RS with some petrol.

Then did the same with the float bowls, filling them with fuel before
popping them back on the carbs.

Attached a car battery and jump leads.

After about 10 seconds of turning over the old girl fired up! And settled to
a good if slightly lumpy idle.

Not bad seeing as it hadn't run since about 2000 or so!

So now on to full service, sort out the brakes and a good front to back
clean :)

Went to the R45 and did the same .... but it wouldn't respond to the start
button so either the relay is not working or there's some other electrical
gremlin. Given its not fired up since about 1992 it's allowed to be grumpy I
guess :)

It looks like I've bought it. Gawd knows when I'll actually get to pick
it up but hopefully before Chimay.

David Silver wants 4 pound plus VAT for one of those for a
CB550. Somebody's got e-bay fever.

  Breaking the 400 Four

Author: The Older Gentleman

I cannot believe what it's been making, in pieces.

Tally so far is over £1400[1] and I've still got the rebuilt front
wheel, frame WLB, excellent forks, side panels and clocks to go.

Even the battery strap - the little rubber strap that secures the
battery in the battery box - made over a fiver, ffs.

Total amount, by the time I've cleaered the last nut and bolt, will be
over £1500. I'm amazed at how much prices for some components have
risen, since I last broke a 400 Four.

[1] The bike itself cost £500.

Right, space needed in the garage, and before I fleabay it I am offering
it up here first.

It is a 1980 American import model
We have owned this bike since 1995.
(Although the reg doc shows a few name bounces as it was loaned out)
*no* MOT.
SORNed (but you will have to reSORN)

It has stood in the garage for nearly 6 years, the tank and carbs were
drained.

No Battery

It took me 30 mins to get it running using my XJ battery this
afternoon. Then I rode it up and down the street.

200ukp will secure.

Its red

It runs (ticking over at 1k, even the gear numbering lights work)

  Lucas K2F magneto coil rewind

Author: N_Cook

A pensioner has asked me about possiblity of rewinding some of these magneto
coils.

laying on cm/mm graph paper.
Orangey section is the laquered coil.
C area is the contact patch (supplying 2 HT leads in turn) moulded into the
surrounding paxolin? insulation, continued out to the boss marked P, but
otherwise looking like the tarnished brass sections in colour , marked B.
The curve above the C is the shape of one end of this contact section, not a
trick of the light.
A is aluminium housing for the contact breaker
First comment is he has 5 of these , all not working at all or properly, so
probably not good design anyway, as none were abused in use.
He has one good magneto , he moves around 3 bikes. He can get some or all
nonworkers commercially reconditioned , at a price each. But of course he
would like all 5 rewound and he knows, like me , that having researched and
set-up for one then the following 4 rewinds are much easier. I use a
coil-winder machine but little experience of these sorts of coils.
No electrical data found on the net for these.
As received by me, the secondary measured 22K ohm, now reads 6.3K , at this ...

OT: FOAK OST to PST conversion

Author: Hog

In desperation as my file conversion utility disappeared at least 2 laptops
ago. Does one of you have a working/licensed version of an OST to PST
converter (O-2003).

I finally ditched the ejjit in the States and his ever unreliable Exchange
server. Caught most of the data before he went off in high dugeon but I have
a large personal archive currently in limbo.
