Cutty Sark Scotch Whisky was created in 1923 by old-established London wine
merchants Berry Brothers and Rudd, with a deliberately light and delicate
style, breaking all the accepted rules for blended whisky.

This lightness of style made it perfect for cocktails, and it arrived in New
York, the capital of the vibrant cocktail culture of the time, at the height
of prohibition, where it was of course gratefully received by a thirsty
population.

But it's probably best not to ask how the whisky got there!
