I wil be looking for a cheap runabout and have shortlisted both the
Primera gt or Citroen Xsara vts. Both seem to offer that little bit
more to the keener driver but have very low premiums compared to the
usual suspects, (BMW, 306 etc). which car would be the better buy as
they both seem to score the same points. thank you

Primera slightly less likely to go wrong, Xsara will be quicker and handle
better.
I'd have the Xsara no question.
