  Ashover Show - 20th July 2008

Author: Kevin Poole
Date: Jul 19, 2008 00:13

X-No-Archive: Yes

A reminder to anyone within striking distance that the Ashover Classic
Car show takes place on Sunday 20th July.

It used to be organised by the Vintage Austin Register, though I noticed
that this no longer appears on the entry form. It's usually a very
pleasant gathering, with both autojumble and "junk" stalls, a brass
band, and a wide range of cars.

It's in a lovely setting in Derbyshire, between Matlock and Chesterfield.

Please come and say "Hello" - we're No 155, big and black (car, not me)

No connection etc.

  Fur around battery terminal

Author: Dan Smithers

I have observed white- green crystalline fur around the positive
terminal of the battery in my car. Does anyone know what it is, and how
it gets there?

thanks

  Ashtray wanted

I'm looking for an ashtray to fit a 1966 E-Type; in view of William Lyons'
reluctance to spend money I'm sure it was an off-the-shelf part rather than
specifically designed for that particular car, so probably appeared in
various othe cars of that period.

It's a sliding tray design; the actual tray part is 6" wide, 4.5" deep and
1" high. The front plate is a bit bigger, but that doesn't matter.

Cosmetics unimportant as long as it's all there; I want to butcher (sorry,
adapt) it to hold a Tom-Tom satnav.

TIA!

  Vinyl roof for SP250

Author: Geoff Mackenzie
Date: Jul 11, 2008 07:50

Been away, just catching up, managed to lose all messages. Therefore going
from memory. I hate Bill Gates.

As I recall the OP (or his local trimmer) was worried about fitting to
compound curves Some years ago I helped a friend with a rolling
restoration; high on the list was replacing the fabric roof simply to keep
the rain out - it could be done properly a couple of years later once the
oily bits were sorted. We used vinyl of some sort; the trick was to use a
hot air gun (B&Q) which softened trhe vinyl to about the consistency of
well-rolled putty/placticene. Worked a treat. Used the same technique
years later on a Riley RM-something.

  FA: Car Mechanics - 1950s 1960s

Author: Damian Burrin
Date: Jul 8, 2008 14:16

Sorry for first post being an ad.

My father has just sold his Triumph Vitesse and i've just listed his old Car
Mechanics Magazines from the late 50s and early 60s a few from the 70s to.

Ebay numbers 110268973122, 110268973318, 110268973738, 110268974046

Not sure if they're of interest to you guys, its the last lot of these that
he had as i'd already sold a load of the 60s ones one the last free listing
day. What doesn't get sold will be freecycled.

Keep an eye on them if they don't sell and you want them let me know and
cover the postage. He just wants them out the front room!!

Cheers
Damian

  Electric fuel pump recommendation

Author: Ian
Date: Jul 8, 2008 02:59

Folks,

I need to replace the electric fuel pump on the DS. It's non-original:
fitted by the last owner in South Africa to refill the carb after long
periods of standing in the hot sun of KwaZulu Natal and now jolly
useful when starting on a petrol after running on gas.

What's there is a.n.onymous plastic thing with spigot (ie not-banjo)
inlet and outlet fittings. It would be easiest - though not essential
- to fit something similar. Since it is in series with the mechanical
fuel pump (I am not going to change that) it needs to have a
reasonably low resistance to having fuel pumped through it.

A quick look round suggests that the choice is SU, SU copy, Facet and
Facet copy. Any advice or horror stories most welcome.

  Q about Triumph Spitfire Tacho

Author: paul_silverman

I'm in the process of fixing a few things in my '78 Spitfire and I'm
having problems removing the tachometer.

The question is: how do you remove the last of the 3 cables plugged
behind the tacho, as shown below? I tried unscrewing the metal socket
- although it rotates it does not appear to be unscrew. Pulling also
appears not be an an option, the black cable is solidly attached to
the tacho.

Thanks.

  Vinyl roof supplier

A pal of mine has a Daimler Dart (SP250) with a rather scruffy hard
top. He's been wondering what to do with it, and is now thinking of a
vinyl covering. OK, it's dangerously reminiscent of spivvy Mark 2 Jags
of the 60's and crappy Hillmans from the 70's, but in this case I
agree with him - I think it could look rather good, and certainly
rather better than a plain painted hard top.

A local restorer can happily fit one - he's done it before - but would
need the tailored fabric. Oops. Where would one get a tailored vinyl
roof for a Dart (factory) hardtop? Anyone know?
