I have been told by people in my gym that if you are body building /
strength training then running or walking on a treadmill is not good for the
muscles - can somebody enlighten me further on this matter.

Whoever told you that is a fool.
Obviously any increase in cardio work requires consumption of a greater
amount of calories than that expended by the exercise to offset the
caloreis used, and you need to be consuming _more_ than your daily
maintenance calories if you are looking to add muscle mass.
Nothing wrong with regular cardio, just don't over do it or you'll need
to be eating a waggon load of food to compensate.
2 or 3 cardio sessions a week would enable you to reach and maintain a
good level of fitness.

Typically your body will not increase muscle mass in the face of a
caloirie deficit. It comes from genetic programing for survival of the
species.
greater muscle mass = greater metabolic rate = greater calorie
requirement to maintain weight.
Therefore, when food is scarce it makes sense to cut back on muscle mass
to reduce required calorie intake to allow the function of more
important things like breathing etc.
Depending on your level of training and current muscle mass, age and
also current bodyfat percentage will all say whether you can defy what
is typical. Usually somone that's of a high BF (bodyfat) %% and has only
been training for less than 6 months then you can expect to carry on
making muscle/strength gains in the face of a calorie deficit but that
_may_ be down to the fact you are still eating higher than maintenance
calories but far less than you were eating to gain fat.

If you are using the treadmill to bodybuild or strength train then
obviously it's shite for that.
A little bit of cardio won't hurt. Having said that, if you're training
legs properly, the last thing on your mind will be a treadmill.

Heh. It wasn't a treadmill it was a calf machine spike, which I bent with
my ribs. I did a rep or two of squats after that, before deciding it
wasn't such a good idea.

Well it all depends on whatyour going for. If you are looking to gain
lean mass, then run about 3 times a week. preferrably right when you
wake up and make sure your drinking BCAA's as so your body wont start
eating its muscle. Also take a low carb protein for muscle growth. BCAA
i use Xtend(lemonade or orange). protein i use ISOpure(low carb vanilla
or chocolate)
If your looking to gain weight, then dont run, take a gainer,
Cytogainer is what i prefer, and just lift.
If your looking to loose then run 5 days a week in the morning. and
working out anytime after, make sure to take those BCAA's.
