  OT : railway recommendations

Author: Paul Corfield
Date: Jul 7, 2008 14:11

Apologies for a slightly off topic post.

I am considering "doing an Inter Rail" - probably September time. I've
done them before but many years ago and much has changed in Europe since
then in terms of the rail network and the accessibility of many
countries. For example the Iron Curtain still existed, Berlin had a
wall, Yugoslavia was a country and only France had a high speed line!

I know from having read posts on here that there are many well travelled
posters. I'm looking for some suggestions as to good routes to travel on
or towns and cities that you'd recommend. I'm not looking to "bash"
routes for the sake of it - more to enjoy rail travel at its best, see
some excellent scenery and stay in places with good architecture, good
food and hopefully friendly people.

I'm not averse to revisiting places but the following countries I've
never visited - Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Poland.
Luxembourg, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania.

Suggest away!

  More WCML Problems

Author: G
Date: Jul 7, 2008 12:29

My other half is travelling to Euston tonight on the 1510 ex Glasgow,
due 2026. It is now 2026 and the train has just left Warrington
having been held there for over 2 hours due to "signalling problems at
Acton Bridge".

So what's gone wrong this time?

  New Photos from national trip

I finally got around (sigh...) to getting a collection from my 2004
trip around the UK on line. Ravenglass, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales,
Southport, Liverpool, Bristol Parkway..... enjoy and let me know of
any mislabeling.

BBC - New delay for troubled rail firm GC

Author: nickw7coc
Date: Jul 7, 2008 10:46

Continuing technical problems have forced rail firm Grand Central to
delay a return to full service.

The company, which operates between Sunderland and London, was left
with only one train and had to introduce a reduced timetable on 21
May.

It had hoped to restore the three-times daily service by the start of
July.

This has now been postponed while the firm carries out further
"exhaustive tests" to ensure that passengers face no further
disruption.

  APT and speed records

Author: Stimpy

Just watching the recent 'Brits That Made The Modern World' episode about the
APT and they've mentioned that, prior to July 1975, the British rail speed
record was 144mph. What set that record? Not a WCML electric, surely?

From "The Telegraph":

or

A police officer pinned a commuter to the ground and aimed a gun at his
head in a case of mistaken identity at Bournemouth railway station.

SKY News - It's Now Politically Incorrect To Describe Anyone That Takes It Up The Arse As Gay

OK they didn't actually say that but it was written all over their
faces.

Oh well, I suppose it's back to 'shirtlifters' then.

I thought this was hillarious until I stopped and thought this crap
has probably cost someone a hip operation how ironic would that be if
they turn out to be gay - sorry MSM.

New Labour's taxes don't you just love em.

  More Security Required - report

Author: Graham Harrison
Date: Jul 7, 2008 01:46

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2008/jul/07/transport.railtravel

I can't immediately find the release which I assume this is based on but I
can't help feeling that the questions were badly skewed to produce the
reported result. I can just imagine the complaints if you had to turn up
Euston 30 minutes before Pendolino departure.

Network Rail and train operating companies should increase their expenditure
on security and bring the rail network's anti-terrorist measures in line
with the aviation industry, according to business travellers.

Lengthy security queues at Heathrow airport and restrictions on the contents
of hand luggage are the bane of many air travellers, but a survey published
today indicates that they are deemed necessary by premium passengers.

Nine out of 10 business people feel secure when travelling through airports,
with increased security measures being welcomed despite the knock-on
effects, which include dire punctuality figures at Heathrow, with more than
four out of 10 flights leaving the airport late.
