Off the top of my head, I thought that it would be valid to take a train
from Stalybridge to Leeds, and then Leeds to Doncaster, but the routeing
guide does not offer that route. (It offers either maps GM+PS or MR+PS
or WK). The combination maps suggest a route via Manchester and
Sheffield and the single map is SYB-HUD-WKF-DON.
Now at first glance the Manchester-Sheffield route looks silly to me,
and it is of course much further than the route through Mirfield. The NR
Journey planner, however, offers 12.70 as the cheap day fare available
both via HUD or MAN, and when I asked if to print a personalised TT, it
printed one that only had trains via MAN.
But a quick calc suggests to me that the route via Leeds is shorter than
via Manc/Sheffield, and when I ask the NR journey to give me times and
fares for SYB-LDS-DON, it gives me a quicker journey time than either of
the other routes (which I'd expect) but then says there are no off peak
fares, and wants me to pay 42.60 for an open.
So, what's going on? If Sheffield is a permitted route, why isn't Leeds,
which is both shorter and quicker?

Have a look at this video of Ram, the Virgin Train Manager:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a8ayHHHnt4
Aside from Ram of course, any other contenders for worst (and even best) Virgin Train Managers? Or perhaps of another TOC?

6024 Preservation Society Ltd have their water wagon. I saw it last year
on the Yeovil Betrothal - not very pretty. The web site doesn't seem to
have been updated recently. Is the wagon in use? Or is it being clad in
some way?

I was on a Cross Country train today from Cheltenham to Manchester. I was
expecting it to go into the west end of New Street and reverse out to head
off to Wolverhampton.
Instead we slowed down at Kings Norton and crossed over to take the Camp
Hill route and go into New Street from the east, passing all the way
through the station to get to the west side to head off to Wolverhampton.
Can someone enlighten me as to why it goes this way - I though New Street
was really congested so it would have made more sense to go in at one end
and reverse out again.
Is it to keep up route knowledge? To avoid running the service in reverse
formation? To introduce slack in the timetable (to give the option of
running into the west to catch up if late)?
Despite getting checked several times on the approach to New Street we
still arrived 20 mins before departure time which makes me think it was a
deliberate diversion.

While I can't confirm it (as I've never tried) I'd have thought that the
Heathrow Express ticket offices in the Terminal 123 HEX station,
Terminal 4 station and on the Terminal 5 Arrivals concourse would sell them.

Reports in tonights local paper suggest that there is a desperate need for
more direct services from Harrogate to London.
NXEC are apparently wanting to run a service via Pannal, Horsforth, Leeds
and Garforth every two hours during the day, whilst Hull Trains are wanting
to run four return journeys a day between the spa town and the capital.
NXEC claim that their service will take 3 hours, with Hull Trains claiming a
little over two and a half hours, so possibly they intend going via York?
Needless to say, NXEC are objecting to the Hull Trains plans.
Will the platforms at Pannal, Horsforth and Garforth be suitable to
accomodate a HST (presumably that is what will form the NXEC service)?
Sadly the paper doesn't list the story in the online version, so I can't
post a link.
