One or two clips starting to appear on YouTube of Saturday's first
ever visit of a Deltic to the Cambrian.

I know one or two might think a Deltic on the Cambrian is somewhat
incongruous but hey for sheer novelty value.

This is the best clip I’ve found hopefully some more will appear of
the special along the coastal bit. You know, that bit where you come
home hogging the coast for two hours and you’re still no nearer home
than when you first started back i.e. the best bit.

Don’t you just love all the 1960s pollution that could be designed out
of 3300 bhp – those were the days.

  Cross Country and Engineering

A somewhat curious day out of Nottingham today. As Nottingham drivers are
mowing their lawns, sorry, I mean attending an ASLEF meeting, it is been a
bustitute Sunday in parts of East Midlands once again.

Nottingham - Peterborough has been largely bus. But looking at Departure
Boards I was surprised to see a regular service from Nottingham to
Peterborough today operated by Cross Country. So take your choice, an EMT
substitute bus or a XC 170 non stop to Peterborough.

So far as I can see, the Stanstead - Birmingham's are diverted to Nottingham
due to engineering on the Stamford route. But where is this mentioned?

http://nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/en829f35033140e4b5de0d9282e2d598/details...
reports Leicester to Peterborough is bus, but nothing about the replacement
train service to Nottingham.

EMT website obviously says little about XC, although it is mentioned in a
footnote re ticket validity - your EMT ticket is valid on XC.

XC website says, er, nothing at all. I find this hard to believe, but I
cannot find any reference to engineering work anywhere on the XC website and
obviously nothing about the extra service to Nottingham.

  Railway volunteers praised after derailment

An article has appeared in the Keighley News about the derailment of
47760 at the recent 40th anniversary festival.
http://www.keighleynews.co.uk/display.var.2389001.0.railway_volunteers_praised_after_derailment...

I have to agree that the railway responded quickly, calmly and
professionally to this accident, and the vast majority of the
travelling public (and drinking public - there was a beer festival at
Oxenhope shed) took things with good humour.

It was wonderful watching the railway's civil maintenance gang spring
into action, totally unflustered by proceedings. Total time between
the derailment and the track being back in action cannot have been
much more than 5-6 hours.

I do wonder what actually went wrong - the railway seems to be very
much closing ranks on that one. I suspect people were trying to do too
much in too short a space of time in Oxenhope yard.

  No folded bikes on platforms

Author: Paul Weaver

There have been signs that have gone up recently at Euston telling
people something along the lines of "We appreciate you want to get
away quickly, but please don't unfold your bike until you're off the
platform, one of the reasons we ban bikes in peak is due to platform
congestion"

Now hiking an folded bike down a 12 car train is good for the arm
muscles, but it gets harder when you're trying to avoid the tiny
suitcases people drag behind them. To any other rail companies take
this attitude? Are they trying to overload the tube? Or is it just the
usual selfish seasonable cyclists that make the difference.

  Print Your Own Ticket

Author: allan tracy
Date: Jul 12, 2008 14:30

RE: that other thread about Carlisle to London singles.

Mention was made of Virgin’s print your own ticket offers.

For an uninitiated, could someone please explain how this works?

I’m presuming it’s an Internet thing with online payment then somehow
(email perhaps) they send you a ticket you just print out.

If so, how does the train manger know what you present is a valid
ticket and how do Virgin prevent these tickets being copied and
altered in some way for fraudulent purposes?

The only thing I can think of is that being advanced purchase Virgin
probably tie you down to a particular service which allows the train
mangers to be provided with a list of passengers in advance that or a
secret code on the ticket.

Birmingham to Ulverston - difference between two ticket prices !?

Author: Uncle-C
Date: Jul 12, 2008 12:21

Hi there,
I was just looking on the Trainline website for a return ticket dep.
BNS from 1300 on Monday, not sure about the return date/time. I was
given the option of a Saver Return for £59.60 or a Standard Open
Return for £96.00. Apart from allowing me a Break of Journey on the
way to Ulverston what benefits would the SOR allow ? Do these benefits
justify the £36.40 difference in price between the two tickets ?
Would I be restricted, wrt times of travel if returning from
Ulverston on the Saver Return ticket ? I do not believe that there are
restrictions on what time I can travel from ULV to BNS or is the
Saver return portion not valid before a certain time of the morning ?

Thanks !

OT: What happened with the DB ICE

Author:

I'm just back from a trip to Germany, where, for once, everything
transport-wise was a mess compared to London. The Tube got me to
Heathrow T5 smoothly and dead on time on Tuesday, T5 itself was smooth
and efficient, and BA were excellent. In contrast, Frankfurt T2 is a
building site, getting to the railways stations requires either a trip
on an infrequent and crowded bendy-bus, or a complicated, long Sky Train
trip. But this is all as usual.

What was different this time was the collapse in the ICE 3 service. My
train was shown as being 45 mins late, then 60 mins late, and finally
showed up at 70 mins late. It got to me destination 75 mins late. I
heard it was because of a derailment at Cologne, but had no further
information. Lots of other trains from the Rhineland were also
much-delayed or cancelled.

  Photo site recommendation

A selection of black and white photos of Newcastle upon Tyne from the
mid to late 1960s. A couple might even get Capt Deltic slightly
agitated.

http://www.tynetransport.fotopic.net/c1531001.html

Nothing to do with me - I just saw the selection while checking
something else on the main site.
