Just been reading MR and there's a picture of the Chiltern railcar
being used for road learning by EWS drivers and Virgin guards involved
with the blockade buster.
So, we appear to have a situation where the guards will have a better
road knowledge than the driver up front albeit with an EWS conductor.
Are guards required to have a similar level of route knowledge to
drivers and, if so, why?

I know it's not in the UK, but I am sure many UK railfans will have a
soft spot for the Chemin de Fer du Vivarais. Or rather, with have had.
Word reaches me that the temporary closure is now permanent: staff
have been laid off and the stock is for sale.
What a shame.

This group (and uk.railway) is probably as good a resource as any - if
you indicate which direction away from London you're thinking of,
there's bound to be someone on here who's done it/currently does it...

60009 "Union of South Africa" seems to have an aversion to pulling trains in
a northerly direction - does anybody know what happened yesterday?

P.S. Thanks to the control centre announcer who put out an annuncement over
the tannoy at unmanned stations stating the train back down this morning was
(a) going to be late and (b) diesel hauled - it saved us getting completely
drenched, only soaked through!

Last week, I travelled from London to the West Midlands with Virgin. At the best of times, the at-seat service offered by the First Class crew can be mediocre to say the least. But on this particular train, the top brass of Virgin was on board (the Chief Executive, Tony Collins) the train, as the First Class crew said amongst themselves in coach K.
Lo and behld, the at-seat service was fantastic throughout the journey compared to what is normally the case. If Tony Miles is reading, why don't you tell Tony Collins to travel on every Pendolino train so that the First Class service can be just as good? The London-Preston/Liverpool routes must be the worst, as a lot of the First Class crew can't be bothered to do a full service at the best of times.
Oh, and Virgin have decided in their infinite wisdom to declassify Coach G for 2 months during summer. That's not new news anyway as it is almost always declassified on the majority of busy services at present.

AMBITIOUS multi-million pound plans to restore a rural railway's route
into a market town, forming a link with the East Coast Main Line, are
moving a step closer.
A research project is taking place, with the aim of finding out how
plans to directly link the Wensleydale Railway to Northallerton, in
North Yorkshire, would affect existing rail services.
The link from the railway into the town has been closed for more than
50 years.

Railway bosses have received funding for the study from North
Yorkshire County Council.

Now that the EPRs have been in place for nearly 25 months, it has
recently occured to me that discussions about how to legally travel
with off-peak tickets on the Thameslink route between 16:30 and 19:01
usually lead to solutions involving the stoppers (including those
running fast to Elstree & Borehamwood) but not the (semi-)fasts. I
guess it can't be helped with respect to Off Peak Day Travelcards but
Cheap Day Returns are a different matter.
LondonTravelWatch declared that buying Cheap Day Returns to Redhill
would allow passengers in Central London to return to EPR Zone D even
during the evening peak, but now I realise that you can buy a Cheap
Day Return to any station near the Travelcard zones and, depending on
which station you commence your return journey at, you may also save
money (compared to purchasing Standard Day Returns or Standard/Cheap
Day Single combinations).
