What chance HS2 when HS1 is up for sale?

Author: Ken Ward
Date: Jun 8, 2010 12:06

From issue 225 of Railway Herald...

The Govt is to auction HS1 and cut Network Rail's contract to 5 years
thereby leaving the new owners to do a bit of DIY maintenance if they so
wish.
Glad I did Eurostar last year as it may be Stena Hollandica in future.

Quite possibly so. In that case I will risk a prediction that in
35 years, or much less, energy storage technology will have
progressed to the point that it will no longer be necessary to
string up ugly (and damage-prone) overhead wires to operate
stopping train services, with all the attendant disruption during
the laborious process of installation.

Battery-powered railcars were in use in Germany nearly 100 years
ago, so it's surely not going to be hard to bring the technology
up to date.

Start a new North-South HSL in the middle?

Author: Michael Bell
Date: Jun 8, 2010 10:32

It is accepted that HS2's proposal or any other North-South high-speed
railway proposal cannot pay its way while only a London - Birmingham
link has been built AND that the London - Birmingham link will be the
most expensive part of whole North-South route. So then, the answer is
to build the cheap bits first, the Ringby loop (Birmingham, Stoke,
Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry,
Birmingham), offshoots off it to Scotland, Liverpool and Hull.

THEN the expensive London - Birmingham link can be built. This would
be the normal financier/business way of doing it.

Heathrow 3rd runway - not yet cancelled?

The Tories said they were going to cancel the Heathrow 3rd runway, but
I haven't heard yet that they've done it.
