"Morning Star" is the name for Venus as seen in the sky before the sun
rises. The Greeks called it Eosphorus, and he was the son of Eos, the
Dawn. He was also known as the "Light Bringer" as he preceded the
sunrise. The literal Latin translation for Light Bringer is "Lucifer."

There was also a Babylonian myth about the son of a god who fell from
grace. This god was known as Helel (bright one) and his father was
Shahar (dawn). The reference in the Bible is to these gods, and was an
allegory for the then King of Babylon.

This myth was later conflated with the story of the Angel who tried to
overthrow heaven as the reference to the Babylonian King mentions him
falling from the heavens, a prophetic reference to him falling from
power.

By the time all of this was translated into Latin, the figures in both
stories were named "Lucifer" and this became the name of Satan. So,
like many current Christian beliefs, it's based on a misunderstanding
of context and millenia-old mistranslations.
