3 Dead In Murder-Suicide At Tinker Air Force Base

TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- An Air Force member killed his two children
before killing himself in a military campus house at Tinker Air Force Base
on Monday, authorities said.

According to Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel, a military member and his
ex-wife were involved in an altercation just before 2:30 p.m. The ex-wife
left the home and heard gunshots, Whetsel said.

Tactical teams arrived by about 2:40 p.m. Nearly two hours later, they
gained entry into the home, where they found three people dead -- including
two children, ages 4 and 8.

Whetsel said his department is investigating the incident along with OSI.

Tinker Air Force Base has 26,000 military and civilian employees. It is the
largest single-site employer in Oklahoma.

Former soldiers should retrain as teachers and teach pupils in inner
city schools where discipline is a problem, a thinktank has stated.

The Centre for Policy Studies has stated in a new report that the UK
should develop a system like the Troops to Teachers scheme in the US
to help address the issue of poor behaviour in inner-city schools.

Having ex-soldiers as teachers would offer a number of benefits, the
thinktank says, giving pupils a more rigid discipline structure and
providing ex-servicemen with meaningful employment.

Lord Guthrie writes in the foreword to the report that placing ex-
servicemen in schools is a 'possible answer' to the problems of
increasing violence in schools and inner-city communities.

'It will provide youths with role models who understand discipline and
self-restraint at the time in their lives when they need it most,' he
wrote.

Further to this Lord Guthrie points out that such a scheme has already
seen success in the US and would work well in the UK.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Commentary to the
conventions states that parties to a conflict often would resort to
"intimidatory measures to terrorize the population" in hopes of
preventing hostile acts, but such practices "strike at guilty and
innocent alike. They are opposed to all principles based on humanity
and justice."
