  Roller Blind Confusion

Author: Poppea
Date: Aug 22, 2008 01:01

I recently visited a local carpet/curtain/blind shop and arranged for
a visit to measure my windows for roller blinds. This was in early
June. When the measurements were taken I was left with sample books,
and from this I chose a colour for all the windows, called Mint. After
a long, long delay, the owner of the shop arrived to fit the blinds
but to my horror they are the wrong colour, a rather unpleasant 'pea'
green. The owner had given no written confirmation of the order, and
even the cost was phoned through to me, rather than a letter. He now
says I must pay for the blinds and that his wife, who had taken the
order in the shop, and to whom I'd given the sample (removed from the
book just to be sure) insists the pea green was the one I chose.
Additionally, a separate upstairs window was meant to be blue, but
this has also been fitted with the green. The shop has admitted that
this is a mistake and will put this right. However, strangely, at the
same time one of the blinds I thought I'd ordered, for a half glass
back door, was not fitted. When I queried this, the owner insisted I
didn't order one for that window. But the odd thing is that the
wrongly coloured blind for the bedroom fits the door that's been
missed perfectly. As there was a) no written confirmation of the
order, and b) no written estimate of cost, I'm uncertain of my legal ...

  Meter reading

Author: Frederick Williams
Date: Aug 21, 2008 03:45

From time to time Siemens will drop a card on my door mat telling me
that I wasn't in when they called. Sometimes I am in and within hearing
range of the doorbell. Are they expected to read more meters than they
have time to and do they put such cards through letter-boxes willy-nilly
as they run out of time?

My electricity bill records meter readings(*) as "read by us" (i.e.
Siemens), "read by customer" or "estimated". Sometimes it is deemed
"read by us" even when it has been read by me or not read at all.

Does the electricity board require that they (or their agents) read the
meter from time to time, and when they haven't they just pretend that
they did?

(* I am using the word loosely but not, I hope, in a confusing way. In
any case it is the word used on the bill)

  The name of the potato

Are greengrocers required to sell potatoes by named variety or can they
just be called "potato"?

How are Calgon tablets supposed to work ?

Author: michael adams
Date: Aug 13, 2008 17:12

Apparently they're recommended by many of the major appliance
manufacturers as well....but

Surely the water that hangs around inside a washing machine between
washes and would cause a build up of limescale is the water that was
used for the final rinse of the clothes ? As apparently cold as well as
hot water can cause limescaling. But then the Calgon tablet is never
added to the rinse water, its added to the wash. Which should all then
all have been flushed away by the final rinse water.

To prevent limescale build up it would surely be necessary to soften
all the water, before it even entered the washing machine. Including
the rinse water.
