Crossposting

Author: Ian Jackson
Date: Mar 31, 2008 08:52

I attempted to post an article which was crossposted to
uk.legal.moderated and cam.transport. My article was silently
discarded (without even any log entry at the moderation website).
When I complained the moderators referred to this document:
http://www.uklegal.fsnet.co.uk/ulm.htm
(of which had previously been unaware).

As far as I can see there is no particular reason for a blanket ban on
crossposted articles. It's not mentioned in the actual charter at:
http://www.usenet.org.uk/uk.legal.moderated.html

I think the moderators may be under the misapprehension that there is
some general technical or policy reason why crossposting between
moderated and unmoderated groups doesn't work or should be prevented.
Certainly the discussion in ulm suggests that this view is not
uncommon.

Before I take the matter up with the ulm moderators I would like to
establish the consensus here on the general question: is crossposting
always harmful, or can be useful (obviously at the discretion of the
moderators according to the circumstances, group charter, etc.)
