  Teddy row protestors demand death

Thousands of Sudanese, many carrying knives and sticks, have taken to
the streets of Khartoum calling for the execution of British school
teacher Gillian Gibbons, jailed over a teddy bear.

Crowds demonstrated outside the presidential palace, saying the 15-day
prison sentence imposed on Mrs Gibbons for allowing her class to call a
teddy bear Mohammed was too lenient.

The protesters streamed out of mosques after sermons, as pick-up trucks
with loudspeakers blared messages against Mrs Gibbons, 54, from
Liverpool.

Hundreds of riot police were deployed as demonstrators massed in central
Martyrs Square, outside the palace.

"Shame, shame on the UK," protesters chanted, and they called for Mrs
Gibbons' execution, saying, "No tolerance: Execution," and "Kill her,
kill her by firing squad."

The women's prison where Gibbons is being held is far from the site, as
is the Unity High School where she taught, which is under heavy security
protection.

Hideously overcrowded: The Sudanese jail where the teddy bear teacher will spend 15 days

Author:
Date: Nov 29, 2007 12:48

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id...

The Sudanese jail where British teacher Gillian Gibbons is to spend 15
days after being convicted of inciting religious hatred is an
overcrowded institution where 90 per cent of inmates make wine illegally
to support their families.

The Omdurman prison outside Khartoum reportedly has between 800 to 1,080
inmates at any time, but a capacity of about 200. Every day the prison
is reported to release about 40 women but takes in another 40 to 50.

Omdurman prison director Saeed Dhahiya is reported as saying the
government pays only for the salaries of the prison staff and the food
for the inmates. It does not contribute to any of the other running
costs of the prison.

"We make visitors pay an entrance fee and rely on NGOs and charity for
the other running costs...but it is still not enough," he said.

Dhahiya said the prison became women-only in 1992 when the numbers of
displaced women arrested for wine making suddenly surged as many more
southerners fled to the capital.

He said volunteer doctors visited the prison four times a week and the
prison relied on donations for medicines for the inmates.

Morrissey 'refuses to live in the UK because of immigration explosion'

Author:
Date: Nov 29, 2007 12:48

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/showbiznews.html?in_article_id...

The pop singer Morrissey claims he can no longer live in a Britain he
believes lost to an "immigration explosion".

The former frontman of the Smiths, who is now based in Rome, claimed
England was just 'a memory now'.

The 48-year-old added: "Other countries have held on to their basic
identity yet it seems to me that England was thrown away.

"The change in England is so rapid compared to the change in any other
country.

"If you walk through Knightsbridge on any bland day of the week you
won't hear an English accent.

"You'll hear every accent under the sun apart from the British accent.

"The British identity is very attractive, I grew up into it and I find
it quaint and very amusing."

Morrissey, who has sung of his love for English culture and can count
Tory leader David Cameron as a fan, is the son of an Irish immigrant
family which settled in Manchester.

In 1986, when The Smiths released their critically-acclaimed album The
Queen is Dead, the UK had a population of 56million.

Indian doctor convicted of son's manslaughter cleared to work again in Britain

Author:
Date: Nov 29, 2007 12:48

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id...

A disgraced doctor who was convicted of manslaughter when one of his
patients died of a simple infection has been told he can return to work.

Dr Amit Misra, 37, was found guilty of gross negligence and given a
suspended jail term after father-of-one Sean Phillips developed toxic
shock syndrome following a routine knee operation.

He was also suspended from practising after the General Medical Council
(GMC) heard he had failed to carry out the most basic of tests which
would have shown he had a problem.

But the GMC has now allowed him to start practising again - despite
failing to prove himself in a series of medical assessments tests.

He has been told to follow a series of conditions over the next three
years, including taking a course in basic surgical skills.

The decision has infuriated Mr Phillips's family, who yesterday branded
it 'scandalous'.

His father, Myles, 61, said: 'I am amazed the GMC have given him a
second chance. Are they really that desperate for doctors?

'He effectively killed my son because of negligence.

  Sudan teddy row teacher jailed

British teacher Gillian Gibbons has been found guilty of inciting hatred
after she let her Sudan school pupils name a teddy bear Muhammad.

The 54-year-old mother of two from Liverpool escaped a possible sentence
of 40 lashes but was given 15 days in jail and ordered to be deported by
the court in Khartoum.

Mrs Gibbons was arrested on Sunday after complaints to the Education
Ministry that she had insulted the Prophet Muhammad, the most revered
figure in Islam, by applying his name to a toy animal.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband summoned the Sudanese ambassador to
London to explain the verdict handed down in the case, the Foreign
Office said.

"We are extremely disappointed with the sentence and Foreign Secretary
David Miliband has summoned the Sudanese ambassador to explain what has
happened," a Foreign office spokeswoman said.

The court in Khartoum could have ordered Mrs Gibbons to receive 40
lashes for committing the offences.
