So why go to the extreme of saying the crucifix was a 'health and safety
hazard'?

Wasn't the no jewellery rule good enough?

When I was at school in the year dot, during PE, metalwork and science
we were not under any circumstances allowed to wear any chains or
jewelry for very obvious safety reasons. Anyone with long hair had to
have it securely tied back. What is the problem? The childs parents
would be first in the queue to sue the school if the child were to be
hurt. I've seen the results of a wrist chain coming into contact with
electricity. It wasn't pretty.
