BOYCOTT WALES: Badger deaths are investigated

Badger deaths are investigated
The RSPCA is investigating whether some farmers have taken a proposed
cull of badgers into their own hands.

Four animals were found dead in a field near Crymych, in Pembrokeshire
on 18 April.

Tests are being carried out on their bodies as there were no visible
wounds on the badgers, the charity said.

The Welsh Assembly Government announced a cull of badgers earlier this
month as part of a pilot project to stamp out tuberculosis in cattle.

However the location of the area and details of the cull have yet to
be decided.

RSPCA inspector Gemma Black said: "These badgers died in suspicious
circumstances, but we need the public to help us pursue this matter.

"It may be that some farmers have decided to kill these badgers
following the Welsh Assembly Government's decision to cull badgers as
part of the campaign to eradicate TB in cattle.

Fears badger cull could hit Welsh tourism
Apr 23 2008 by Andrew Forgrave, Daily Post

WILDLIFE lovers are threatening to boycott Welsh tourism and produce
if Wales presses ahead with badger culls.

Tourism operators have reacted with alarm to a potential public
backlash if the killings go ahead.

Tourist information centres in Wales have already received emails from
disgruntled wildlife lovers threatening to shun Wales as a holiday
destination.

Dylan Evans, a partner at Anglesey Sea Zoo, is annoyed tourism groups
and other stakeholders were not consulted about the planned cull.

The Assembly Government announced the initiative as part of a package
of measures aimed at eradicating bovine TB (bTB).

Mr Evans said: “These days people vote with their wallets, so it’s
important perceptions are managed.

Officials at the National Trust say they do not plan to cooperate with
the forthcoming badger cull in Wales and others that may follow in
England, potentially creating a significant hurdle for the government.

In a move likely to infuriate some farmers, leaders of the 3.5
million-member organisation, which owns and manages large tracts of
land, say they do not believe there is a scientific case for killing
badgers in hotspot areas of cattle TB.
