Around eight o clock, each weekday morning an open top Ford Transit
van comes down the street, trawling for discarded appliances.
Householders know that when a washing machine, dryer, oven, fridge
gives up the ghost, they need only pull it onto their drive way and
the appliance will be hauled away for free. People are more likely to
discard these appliances earlier and replace them with new ones. the
cost of repair, increasing energy efficiency of new appliances
encourage people to throw them away rather than pay high warrantee or
repair bills on them. This vehicle is preceded at six by a milk van,
the milk van stops at only one of the seventy five houses in the
street, delivers two pints of milk, then it is off to another
neighbouring street. At one time most houses had a daily milk
delivery, now there is just one. There is the normal rubbish
collection once a week, that hasn't changed much, except the small
metal bins that we once had have been replaced by large plastic
wheelie bins which hold two or three times the volume of stuff of the
old metal bins. Despite the increase size of the bin, some people
still contrive to fill their bins three or four days after they have
been emptied. People who eat lots of packaged processed food and take
aways fill their bins early. At one time there were regular visits ...
