  Horse trailer camera question.

Author: newshound
Date: May 3, 2008 13:39

With the hardware getting cheaper all the time, I've been thinking about
putting a camera inside my horse trailer (a Richardson) and another on the
roof for reversing / rear view on the road, using a wireless link to a
dashboard monitor. Has anyone else tried this? Does the wireless signal work
OK from a trailer to a 4x4? Any tips or advice?

  Skimming walls

Author: Gib Bogle
Date: May 3, 2008 13:29

We have stripped the wallpaper off the walls in our house - these are
what we call gibralter board, what the Americans call drywall or
sheetrock, I don't know what it's called in the UK. Now we will hire
someone to skim them with plaster (to be finally painted). The spatula
used in removing the paper has left some gouges, with occasional little
flaps of drywall paper sticking up.

One of the tradesmen who has given us a quote says that the walls must
be sanded first to smooth off the protrusions, then painted with an
oil-based sealer before the skimming. Another says sanding is not
necessary, he proposes to paint with sealer then start applying the
plaster. In both cases the plaster will be applied in two or three layers.

We are concerned about this inconsistency. Is it necessary to sand
first? I would have thought the little bits of paper sticking out would
either require extra thickness of plaster to cover them, or would tend
to come through to the surface and maybe create irregularities, perhaps
responding differently to paint. How thick would the total plaster
layer be normally?

Thanks in advance for advice.

  Hot Cooker Wire

Author: pdrrose
Date: May 3, 2008 11:46

I was wondering if anyone knew if it is normal for a cooker cord and
plug to get hot during use. THe cooker is pulling 2450watts and has a
factory fitted 13A plug. The socket in the wall is brand new and
fitted by a professional electrician.

It does not get so hot as to smell of burning but is hot to the
touch.

If this is not normal how do I go about changing the wire or is this a
job for an appliance engineer?

Thanks in advance.

Shall I get the roof mended in two halves or all at once?

Author: George (dicegeorge)

Shall I get the roof mended in two halves or all at once?

Presumably it's cheaper to do it all at once,
as only one set of scaffolding would have to be erected etcetera.

But the back half is much more complicated.
I'm thinking of extensions and skylights but havent enough decided yet
to specify them, so perhaps I should wait until next year
when have learned more from here and elsewhere
so as to avoid them having to rip out slates they'd laid this summer.

Also I could move valuables to the back half of the house
so if it rains they wont get wet.

But on the other hand maybe that isnt much wasted work,.
the workers having to come on site twice?

How much of a saving would I make (in rough percentage)
having the whole roof renewed at once,
compared to doing the front this summer and the back next summer?

The nails holding down the slates are rusty,
so I think i must have it all off and put on again,
rather than fiddly patching

thanks

  Air lock in CH?

Author: Another Dave
Date: May 3, 2008 08:39

I've just drilled through a pipe under the floorboards :-( It's one of
the 22mm pipes between the condensing (not combi) boiler and the hot
water cistern. I've fixed it and bled (bleeded?) the pump. The boiler
starts normally but then goes off after about a minute without heating
the water.

I'm assuming water is coming from the loft header tank because air and
then black water came out of the pump when I bled it. There isn't any
air in the upstairs radiators.

Any ideas?
