Blair: manner of Saddam's execution 'completely wrong'

Tony Blair will do a slightly toned down version of John Prescott's response
to Saddam Hussein's execution this week. His press office is saying he will
tell us he thinks the manner of the execution was "completely wrong".

Not, take note, the execution itself (although he will no doubt restate
Britain's opposition to the death penalty) but the manner in which it was
carried out. The PM's hitherto silence on the whole sorry saga of the
hanging and the video and the taunts has drawn much criticism.

What we are told he will say is hardly surprising. What's perhaps more
interesting is that it follows Gordon Brown's declaration this morning that
the whole thing was a deplorable set of events. Mr Brown was also clear that
there are several lessons to be learned from the whole Iraq episode.

[Uh-huh. Convenient it's a Respect supporter. They don't dare go
after Galloway again; he won a libel suit against such charges.

I was asking *Moderator* where his proof was that he was "protesting Saddam

Socialist Senator Makes US History

By Richard Allen Greene

The US Senate may not be ready for Bernard Sanders. It's a collegial, even
fusty place, where senators' hair turns white with decades of speeches and
service.

Mr Sanders has the requisite white hair surrounding his bald patch, but his
attitude remains unmistakeably New York despite his many years in Vermont.

"Anybody read your website?" he asks the BBC brusquely at the beginning of
an interview ahead of taking his seat in the Senate.

Assured that millions do, he says: "OK, let's talk to them."

The blunt manner is not all that sets apart Mr Sanders, the newly-elected
senator from Vermont known to all and sundry simply as "Bernie".

[Russia is supporting Iran's call for talks to reach a solution on the
issue of nuclear development. The US keeps insisting on surrender before
negotiations, and Iran will not give up its right, under the NPT, to
develop nuclear power. Nothing changes. But Russia is assuming the
temporary rotating Presidency of the UN Security Council and continues
to urge restraint (2nd item below). -NY Transfer]

Hanging 'makes martyr of Saddam'

"No-one will ever forget the way in which Saddam was executed - they turned
him into a martyr, and the problems in Iraq remained." -Hosni Mubarak

The circumstances of the hanging of Saddam Hussein have turned the former
Iraqi leader into a martyr, Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak has said.

Mr Mubarak said the unofficial pictures that emerged of the event were
revolting and barbaric.

The chaotic scenes at the execution, during which Saddam was taunted, have
been condemned across the world.

Egypt is a key regional ally of the US and one of only two Arab states to
have signed a peace deal with Israel.
