Are the SATA/SAS hard drive sleds in a Sun Ultra 40 M2 the same as the
ones used in the old Enterprise Servers (i.e. E250, E450), the Ultra 60,
and the Sun Blade 1000? I want to know if I can "recycle" old sleds for
use in a Ultra 40 M2.

Hi Chaps,
I upgraded the RAM in my Sun Ultra 10 and have the original RAM sat
around doing nothing. If someone would like to pay the postage and a
token sum, then they can have it. If this is going to an educational
establishment then just the postage will suffice.
Thanks Adam.

What are your views the rise of green IT? Is it all hype? Or do you
believe the major vendors are making significant progress towards
offering genuinely environmentally responsible products and services?
If you are/were in a position to influence the purchase choices of
the
company you work for - would you consider the green attributes of the
product/service as important?
Does your company have its own green procurement policies or minimum
standards?
Do you believe any of the major IT vendors are leading the way when
it
comes to green IT, or do you hear more from certain vendors on the
subject than others?
I am very interested to hear your views - I am conducting research as
part of an MBA dissertation into this subject and I keen to get the
honest views of people working in the field!
Appreciate any thoughts you may be able to share!

No reason why the Sun-supported PCI framebuffer cards won't work fine in a
Blade 1000.

There is no realistic way to compare that sort of system to a Sparc machine
though - doesn't matter what anyone says, unless there are ways to use
CPU-independent benchmarks to compare performance of various platforms and
configurations, comparisons are worth nothing. Which is a pity in a way
since it would be good to show up the Wintendo crowd more often. 8-)

Ultra 60's are now becoming very cheap. In addition, they're robust, and
quite expandable in terms of RAM, PCI, etc. With general TLC (regularly
cleaning out dust, etc. and making sure the power supply always has good
airflow), the machine will be useful for a very long time.

Have you tried running the system with something connected to serial port A
acting as a serial console? You'll get a lot more diagnostic output that way
which will hopefully help to pin-point the problem.
It might help to re-seat any Sbus cards you have installed in the system
just in case any of them are not pushed down onto the Sbus connectors on the
system board properly, and also check the RAM modules, etc. plus all the
other connectors.
I hope this helps.
Regards,
