This is an area where Spaces starts to become quite useful. I have my
Windows VM running fullscreen on Space 2 (I have mine arranged as a
single column of four).

I've also set up speakable items, so I can now just _say_ "space two"
and it flips to it. "Space one" flips me back.

This is something you could certainly do using Parallels, to pick up
your other question.

Hmm, as far as I know, all the Uk banks support Macs. Mine certainly
does. Could you not use a bank which is a subsidiary or affiliate of an
English/Scottish/Norn Irish bank?

Yes. You can run XP or Vista or both if you feel like it. I bought mine
from here: http://tinyurl.com/496t6z given my work, and the act that XP
Home is rubbish I bought the Pro version, YMMV.

Yes. It will be exactly like Windows on a PC because it is effectively
Windows on a PC.

Yes. As above, it's Windows.

It needs its own antivirus and if you intend to connect to the internet
it's own firewall though if you used "Shared Networking" it will benefit
from the Mac's firewall. Grisoft AVG and Zone Alarm are available free
and do a decent job.

Remember your Mac can't catch a Windows virus, but it can pass it on to
Windows if you're not careful.

Yes. Parallels (and Boot Camp) run full, licensed versions of Windows.
They're not emulating it in any way therefore you will need a full Windows
license

Yes, it's Windows

Yes, it's Windows - and therefore needs to be updated

Yes, it's Windows - and is, therefore, as susceptible as always to viruses,
spyware, etc.

Doing business in Dublin, Ireland. We are 100%% mac company.

After a month of trying we have had to surrender and get a PC for one
purpose and one only - to run online banking.

Not a single major bank in this country allows Macs to use their
business online banking software....

I spoke to three people in Apple Ireland about this..

a) at first they claimed they had never heard this.
b) then they admitted it and said it was a pity
c) I asked them what they planned to do about it and they said it was up
to the banks.
d) I asked them if they are pressuring the banks. They said no.

Fuck !

iMac in a business environment on a network

I have parallels but have not installed it yet - would anyone answer a
couple of really basic Q's ?

- Do I need to buy a full version of Windows, e.g WindowsXP ?
- Will it take up humungous amounts of space as it does on a PC ?
- Will it go through the updates process as it does on a PC ?
- Do I need to run it's own antivirus and firewall apps ... separate
from the MACOSX ones ?
- Do both systems stay running at the same time ?
- Can I toggle between them ?
- Do I therefore need >2 or even 3Gb RAM to make it all work reliably ?
- Will I stay on the network ? or will MacOSX stay on it and Windows not
?
- Is it reliable enough to run a business Accounts application ?

Sorry for being so ignorant of how this works..

14. VLC does not start anymore or does strange things

Delete your preferences and try again. You can use the script "Delete
Preferences.app" on the disk-image to do that. If you want to do it by
hand, delete "org.videolan.vlc.plist" and a folder called "VLC" in
~/Library/Preferences (your personal preferences-folder inside the
library of your HOME). If this does not help, see 13.

  OS X as music video

Another entry in my occasionally swiped-from-Digg series:

<http://www.tuaw.com/2008/05/10/the-os-x-desktop-as-music-video/>

Excellent video and yes, it's got the song into my head and a purchase
is likely to be made there too.

Cheers,
Ian
