  Linux on the BBC

This article has just been pointed out to me by someone I've been trying to
convince (in a spectacularly unsuccessful way) to use Linux.

  Why Python

Author: Geoffrey Clements
Date: Sep 19, 2008 04:49

In answer to Chris Davies' request in another thread about python please
look at http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/3882, I think it's an
interesting article but please put on the standard ESR goggles first.

I like Python and I program in it more often than anything else but I'm not
going to recommend it to you. Your choice of language will depend on your
psychology and the problem to be solved, Python isn't good for everything.

  Linux friendly MP3 player

Author: Andy Hawkins
Date: Sep 18, 2008 07:46

Hi all,

Posted this over on alt.music.mp3.hardware but thought there may be some
people in here with advice too.

I'm currently using an oldish 40 Gig iPod in my car, running Rockbox. This
is almost full now, and getting a bit long in the tooth, so I'm on the
lookout for a suitable replacement.

Basic requirements:

1. Must just appear under Linux as a standard USB storage device, so I can
just use rsync to copy my music across.

2. Ideally should support FLAC and OGG (Ogg is more important, as that's
what I've convered my FLACs to for listening in the car). However, if I have
to re-convert to MP3 then that's not a major issue.

3. Must have a 'line out' jack so that I can connect it to my car stereo.

4. Must have a car charger available.

5. Must have a capacity of at least 60 Gig (I realise this puts me into hard
disk based players).

6. Ideally will support browsing both through the filesystem to pick up
files that way, *and* via some form of tags database if I wanted to choose
music that way.

  Samsung ML-1640 printer problem

Author: Jabali Pragya
Date: Sep 16, 2008 03:49

I bought this printer today but cannot make it work with MDV2008.1 system.
Printerdrake does not have a driver for it, so I installed the driver
provided on the disk. It actually installed 3 drivers, CLP300, ML2010 &
ML1640. I can't get any printing with any of the three drivers.

The printer is OK, I attached it to a Windows machine and it worked fine.
Linuxprinter.org lists this printer as perfectly working.

What should I do next ?

Two Sound cards Two different outputs

Author: Martin Burke
Date: Sep 12, 2008 12:42

Is it possible to run two different sound cards under Linux (Mint 5.x)
and have them play two different streams.

I have got one built onto my M/Board and an external sound card, both
are seen by the system but can only get one working :( at any one time
but not both at the same time have to remove/disable at the moment.

what I want to do is stream my music using a RF transmitter round the
house but I dont want to hear the music on the desktop.

I know you can do something like it with VLC but cant seem to get the
sound cards to work together :(
