Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
our troubles will be out of sight
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
our troubles will be miles away.
Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.
Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself A merry little Christmas now.

Have you ever seen a Vista PC where suddenly one day the initial Windows
password (which has been used many times before) is deemed to be incorrect?
It was the only user that was defined, and even in Safe Mode it was the only
one offered - not like XP where Administrator is offered as an alternative
in Safe Mode.
A friend had this happen to his PC - I've just had to reinstall it from the
system restore disks. He, his wife and his daughter all thought it was the
same value: you can understand one person mis-remembering it but three is
implausible.

A real pet-peeve of mine is Windows applications which require non-standard
access rights to run.
I look after a few sites/servers/machines for different companies, and every
time they get a specific piece of software I have to faff around with
permissions. This is a pain as you have to remember what's set where should
the software ever move home/machine needs rebuild etc.
It's also a security risk.
However the support lines of these companies advise "Just make them local
administrators" to fix the problem, or "give them write access to
windows\system32". When software doesn't work IMMEDIATELY, it's the IT guy
that comes off looking a pleb :-(
I *know* Microsoft released guidelines for this stuff getting on for 10
years ago pre-Windows 2K, but I can't find any documentation online. Does
anyone have an official Microsoft link so I can prove to these companies
(and who pays my bills) it's not OUR problem, it's the hap-hazard way their
software is written?
Even companies like Sage still advise changing users to Admins to get their
software working properly :-(

A friend has reported that his new Vista PC has suddenly started rebooting
itself whenever he tries to shut it down or hibernate it - it goes through
all the normal shutdown/hibernate process but then instead of turning off
the power (ie HDD and LEDs should go out) it boots up again. He's using ">"
button on the start menu to bring up the various shutdown options.
Everything worked fine when I helped him set up the PC (transfer data from
old PC, share drives/printer, set up Windows Mail etc) and he's not aware of
any configuration change since then. Googling "Vista will not shutdown"
brings up lots of refernces to freezing at shutdwon, but nothing that I can
see about spontaneous rebooting.

I have replaced a defective DVD-RW drive with another one of the same make
and similar model.
Nero 5, supplied as part of Ulead Movie Maker, bundled with the PC, does not
offer the new drive in its list of destination drives - only the various
image writer formats are listed.
I've downloaded and run Nero's Burn Rights program which is the recommended
action for the FAQ "cannot write to CD drive". There don't seem to be any
other FAQs on the subject.
Unfortunately the new drive did not come with a CD of CD-writing software
such as Nero.
I've proved that the drive works fine: it can read CD-RW discs and it can
write to them using the built-in drag/drop mechanism of XP.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
