Hi all,
I`m interested in getting hold of a decent server for my home network. CPU
speed isn`t too important, but i`d like to have more than one core. I want
it to sit on the network as a file server, so dual 500MHz processors would
do, anything more is a bonus.
I`d like to be able to put a LOT of disks in this machine - 4 x 500 gig
drives with the potential for more. SATA or PATA is fine, as I`ll be buying
the disks to go with the machine. Gigabit networking would be an advantage
as well, to help move the data onto it.
The ability to stick a Linux distro on it to run the disks in a RAID 5 array
would be a deffinite boost - I want the disks on RAID5, to give me some
protection. Failing that I`ll use Windows, which would also make it easier
to use it to hos t af ew virtual machines to play about with :-). An old HP
or COmpaq server that meets the requirements would be excellent.
Anyone got anything suitable, or got a decent source for reliable second
hand servers? I`d rather have an old well built server than a bargain
basment Dell server :-) The same logic applies to my rpinters, explaining
the tank sized Laserjet 5 in a corner :-)
Thanks in advance for your help!

I can remember when 120mb was an enormous amount of storage.....
Just taking Adobe Acrobat by itself these days, it needs over 90mb of HDD space!
What ever happened to nice, simple and SMALL software packages?

I don't, I seem to have drifted off servers a bit onto other things at the
moment (depends what deals come through as time goes by).
If cost is an issue you might want to consider some sort of fibre channel
array. Fibre drives are ridiculously cheap as no-one wants to bother with
them....
