I bought some recordable CDs 'Ridisc' 'Grade AAA' 52xwrite. These are the
ones with a purple section on the face.I put a self adhesive notelet on it.
They're not very sticky designed to be rmoved. After some days, I look the
sticker off only to remove a great strip of the aluminium coating! I've
never tried this before and I'm not now going to try it with othe brands of
disks, but I don't think it should happen.
This is the disk, though I didn't buy them from here.

So why didn't you put it in a sleeve of some sort and put the post it note
on that?

It's a lesson that most have learnt. I hope the CD didn't have anything
irreplaceable on it. In my case, all I lost was a backup of another CD -
and the original was fine (phew).

Because Post-it-notes aren't very sticky at all , and CDs shouldn't fall
apart in the fashion mentioned.

Well, it's interesting to know that it's happened to someone else, with
post it notes? and a different make of disk? I really will have to be
careful.

According to the DVD FAQ:
http://dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#3.3
and the CDR FAQ:
http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq07.html#S7-7
both CDR and DVDR disks are 1.2mm thick by specification.
However, the recordable layer is on the top surface of a
CDR, whereas on a DVDR it is in the middle (between two
0.6mm layers of clear plastic).
In short, what you describe is a risk with all CDR disks,
most easily avoided by archiving everything to DVDR.

I've had various problems over the years, but things seem to have
settled down a bit now. Two things I do:
1) Only use good discs using Taiyo Yuden dye
2) Never write on the CD
