I think it may be a software issue as well - here's why...
On the built-in DVD drive, movies are playing badly in a couple of
Intervideo apps (WinDVD and some other thing) and also in Windows Media
Player.
However, I have an IDE to USB cable so I connected an IDE DVDRW to the
laptop and... DVDs playing perfectly with Windows Media Player, but less
than perfectly with the Intervideo stuff.
