The Vista message is correct - a "SMART error" indicates failure is
imminent.
Get any important data (photos, letters, emails?) off the disk whilst / if
you still can.
If the drive is, as you say, new then you will be able to return it to the
supplier or manufacturer under warranty. Just tell them, as you told us,
that it gives a SMART error and they will accept the return.
