apart from Dell any laptops worth buying? or even a weblink that will
point a friend in the right direction? not fussy gaming wise just a
fast laptop, money up to £1000

So does he want ultra-portable, desktop replacement, good battery life,
wide screen ... ? What does it have to be fast at?

to be honest hes bedridden suffering from an inoperable brain tumour so
portability and battery life are a bit meaningless, he has a problem
with mobility & currently running a Dell desktop with a wireless
keyboard mouse which I tried to persuade him is all he needs but he's
got money to burn as the Ipod nano, I-touch ,300 disk cd changer that
been brought recentl, that all could be looked after by loading the cd's
on the desktop, but hey ho its not my money and I dont think hes going
to live forever and as you cant take it with you might as well enjoy it
while you can ...
