5V PSU's ?

Author: Martin Slaney

Anyone know of a place to source these ? - The kind reqd. for external
2.5" HD enclosures, USB hubs etc. Would be rated about 2 - 2.5A, with a
miniature DC barrel connector (this seems to be something of a
quasi-standard for 5V computer devices). Generally "wall-wart" form
factor, switch-mode things.

[Gripe with suppliers]

I was looking around a couple of suppliers for powered (active) USB hubs
- none of the feckin listings state clearly whether a PSU is included
... grrrr ....

Oh yeah ... just dug up my specs and a vernier ... diameter of the DC
barrel looks to be about 3.5mm.

Just pick any of the Hong Kong Ebay electronic bits sellers and ask for
a quote for the number and the spec that you want. I did that for a load
of USB power "wall warts", rated at 5v 1A (the type with a built-in USB
socket). They came in at under 1GBP each, IIRC.

They had quite an interesting SMPSU design - which I found out when I
opened a DOA one. As that one had a resistor that had been clearly
broken during the case assembly, they clearly don't test them following
prior to shipping.

All of the powered hubs I've ever seen have been supplied with
power-supplies. These days you will find that most mobile phone
chargers deliver 5v at about 1A which is probably sufficient for most
purposes. If you need another PSU then you are pretty certain to be able
to get whatever you want at Maplins, but it will be more expensive than
a noname charger from a mobile phone shop.

Can't see em being too interested when I say 1, maybe 2 ;-)
50,000 ... maybe :-)

Common sense tells me that a n-port USB will want/expect a n/2 + a bit -
rated PSU (assuming USB spec of 500mA power/port) so a 4-port hub would
want 2-and-a-bit amps. Does this sound reasonable ?

not sure of the rating as they are at work but they have the usual
barrel type connectors but have a "micky mouse" mains input ...

The guys selling in ebay aren't the manufacturers. They will be quite
happy to sell you a couple, or even one. Try them and see.
