We have the cheapie tracfones that you can get for under $20. They work
fine and cost a minimum of $20 every two months to keep them active,
depending on how many minutes you want to add. There are a lot of ways
to get promotional codes to get double minutes but the downside is their
customer service call center. It's in India, and a huge hassle to have
to call when there's a problem with minutes loading or whatever. We've
had problems 4 or 5 times in the last year or so. Because of that, I
don't recommend tracfone.
There's another pre-paid phone by Netzero that gives you a lot more
minutes with every card that I've heard lots of people recommend over
the other brands. They start you with 300 free minutes and give you at
least 300 more with every card you purchase. Their phones are around
$20 more upfront, and I don't know how often you have to add minutes.
We've got a new cell phone company here called Cricket that offers
unlimited minutes and no contract for $45 a month. That's not too bad a
deal.
I hate cell phones but have been glad to have one when I needed it. I
even think June needs one too, after the car broke down recently and she
was stuck out there!
