Open and Shut Door
[From the Seventh-day Adventist Encyclopedia, Second Revised Edition,
Commentary Reference Series vol. 11 (Hagerstown, Maryland: Review and Herald
Publishing Association, 1996), pp. 249-252.]
OPEN AND SHUT DOOR. An expression derived from Rev. 3:7, 8, where Christ is
described as the one "that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and
no man openeth" (an allusion to Isa. 22:22), and as the one who says to the
Philadelphia church, "Behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no
man can shut it." Seventh-day Adventists have applied these texts to the
closing of the first phase and the opening of the second and final phase of
Christ's ministry in heaven, where He has been the Christian's high priest
since His sacrifice on the cross (see Sanctuary). Christ's dual ministry was
prefigured by the service of the ancient high priest, who served "unto the
example and shadow of heavenly things" (Heb. 8:5). In the earthly sanctuary
he served daily in the holy place, the first apartment of the sanctuary, and
once a year in the Most Holy Place, the inner shrine where was the golden
ark in which were the tables of the Ten Commandments and over which appeared
the visible glory of God. This entering into the Holy of Holies took place
on the Day of Atonement in the ceremony of the cleansing of the sanctuary
(Lev. 16).

In applying the type to Christ, Ellen White declared: "Then Jesus rose up
and shut the door in the holy place, and opened the door in the Most Holy,
and passed within the Second Veil, where He now stands by the ark; and where
the faith of Israel now reaches. I saw that Jesus had shut the door in the
holy place, and no man can open it; and that He had opened the door in the
Most Holy and no man can shut it: (Rev. 3:7, 8); and that since Jesus has
opened the door into the Most Holy Place, which contains the ark, the
commandments have been shining out to God's people, and they are being
tested on the Sabbath question" (Present Truth 1:21, August 1849; also Early
Writings, p. 42).

This application corrected, not immediately but eventually, a
misunderstanding of the "shut door" of the parable of the wise and foolish
virgins--a misconception that had been derived from the Millerite movement
of 1844.

The Millerites had based their expectation of the return of Christ
principally on Daniel's prophecy of the cleansing of the sanctuary at the
end of 2300 prophetic days (Dan. 8:14). At the climax of the movement, in
1844, they [p. 250] specifically connected this prophecy with the
purification ceremony of the ancient Day of Atonement as typifying the
ending of Christ's mediation for sins (though they saw the cleansing of the
sanctuary as the purging of the earth in the final fires). At the same time
they gave increased and specific emphasis to the prophetic parable of the
wise and foolish virgins (Matt. 25).

William Miller had likened his message of the expected Second Advent to the
"midnight cry" of the parable ("Behold, the bridegroom cometh"), and had
emphasized the point that the wise virgins, who were ready to meet the
arriving bridegroom, entered with him into the wedding, where the door was
shut after them, leaving the tardy foolish virgins outside. The virgins he
interpreted as those summoned to meet the returning Lord; the wedding, the
eternal kingdom, from which the unready would be forever excluded. "The door
was shut," he said, "implies the closing up of the mediatorial kingdom, and
finishing the gospel period" (William Miller, Evidence . . . of the Second
Coming of Christ [1840], p. 237).

Unlike most others who were then looking for the near advent of Christ (see
Premillennialism), the Millerites placed strong emphasis on the doctrine
that at the coming of Christ every human being would be either ready or
unready to meet Him, and that opportunity for salvation would then cease.
This in theological parlance was called the close of human probation. The
Millerites taught "that the notion of a probation after Christ's coming is a
lure to destruction, entirely contrary to the Word of God, which positively
teaches that when Christ comes the door is shut, and such as are not ready
can never enter in" ("Boston Second Advent Conference," The Signs of the
Times 3:69, June 1, 1842; reprinted in SB, No. 1083).

Because they expected Christ to return at the close of the 2300 prophetic
days, they had emphasized the close of probation at the end of that period.
Therefore, for a short period after the disappointment of October 1844,
Miller and many others thought that their work for the world was done, that
there was only a little "tarrying time" left--perhaps but a few days or
months--until Christ would come. In December 1844 Miller wrote: "We have
done our work in warning sinners, and in trying to awake a formal church.
God, in his providence has shut the door, we can only stir one another up to
be patient; and be diligent to make our calling and election sure. We are
now living in the time specified by Malachi iii:18, also Daniel xii:10, and
Rev. xxii:10-12. In this passage we cannot help but see, that a little while
before Christ should come, there would be a separation between the just and
unjust, the righteous and wicked, between those who love his appearing, and
those who hate it. And never since the days of the apostles, has there been
such a division line drawn as was drawn about the 10th or 23rd day of the
7th Jewish month" (William Miller letter, in Advent Herald, Dec. 11, 1844,
p. 142; reprinted in Western Midnight Cry 4:25, Dec. 21, 1844).

Others expressed themselves similarly at first. But J. V. Himes, Miller's
most prominent colleague, and others held that since Christ had not come,
the 2300-day prophetic period must not have ended in 1844; that it must
extend to some other date in the future, and therefore that the fulfillment
of the "midnight cry" of the parable of the virgins was also still future;
and that the October 1844 movement (see Seventh-Month Movement) was a
mistake, and was not a fulfillment of prophecy. By the spring of 1845 the
main Millerite group, including Miller, had come to this view. This group,
still possessed of the idea that the "door" of the parable of the virgins
was none other than the "door of salvation," argued thus: Since Christ has
not come, the door of salvation is still open; therefore, the parable of the
virgins has not yet met fulfillment. They concluded that anyone who taught
that this parable had been fulfilled must believe that probation had ended,
and must, therefore, be ipso facto a "no-mercy" heretic. The phrase "shut
door" became an epithet.

But a minority continued to hold that the time had been correct; that the
mistake had been in the nature of the prophetic fulfillment; that in October
1844 the 2300 days had ended in the symbolic Day of Atonement and the
parable had been fulfilled (though not in the way that they had expected);
and therefore that the door of the parable--whatever it might mean--had been
shut in fulfillment of the prophecy. To them the phrase "shut door" was
equivalent to the affirmation of belief that the "true midnight cry" had
been the climax of a God-given message and the 1844 movement had been led of
God and permitted, in His providence, as a test of their consecration and
willingness to be ready to meet their Lord. Naturally these regarded the
majority, who had given up "the time," as turning their backs on the truth
and denying the Lord's leading in the "midnight cry."

[p. 251] Some continued to hold--as Miller had taught--that the door was
that of salvation, for they still expected Christ to return very shortly. As
time passed, some held that it was the door of "access" to listeners--that
obstinate and willful individuals had closed their ears to God's message for
that day; in either case there was no chance of winning acceptance of their
message by the world at that time. The unfortunate controversy over the
"shut door" magnified the subject unduly and prolonged the misunderstanding.
As might be expected, feelings ran high in this time of disillusionment and
confusion.

The extremists on the shut-door doctrine declared that Christ had come, not
literally, but "spiritually" (see Spiritualism [1]). But the small group
that formed the nucleus of the future Seventh-day Adventist Church opposed
alike the vagaries of those who declared that Christ had come spiritually
and the position of the majority who "denied their past experience" in the
1844 movement. They retained their confidence in the 1844 fulfillment, and
concluded that the mistake lay in the event they had expected.

They accepted the explanation of the Disappointment that was first advanced
by Hiram Edson on the day after the Disappointment, namely, that the
ministry of Christ as our high priest in the heavenly sanctuary had not
ended with the 2300 days, but had entered another phase, as symbolized (1)
by the high priest's entry into the Holy of Holies, the beginning of the
symbolic cleansing of the sanctuary, and (2) by the coming of the bridegroom
to the wedding (not to the earth); and that the end of this phase,
symbolized by the priest's coming out of the sanctuary and the bridegroom's
return from the wedding (Luke 12:36), was yet to come, and would be followed
by the Second Advent.

Their retention of the belief in the 1844 ending of the 2300 days and their
separating of the Second Advent from that prophetic period saved them from
the error to which the majority group was susceptible--that of seeking
future dates for the end. But it left them with the dilemma of either
accepting the no-mercy doctrine or correcting their view of the "shut door"
from the initial Millerite definition of it. They gradually came to see the
opening of the final phase of Christ's ministry as the shutting of the door
of the holy place and the opening of the door to the Holy of Holies--the
opening of a new message of the Sabbath, and the opening of a broadened
ministry to the world preceding the Second Advent. But this took time.

It is interesting to trace the steps by which the little groups that later
became the Seventh-day Adventists moved out of the shut-door dilemma and
solved the double problem: (1) Is the door shut? and (2) What is the door?

Ellen G. Harmon (later White) was accused of claiming divine revelation for
the no-mercy doctrine. This she denied. She stated later: "With my brethren
and sisters, after the time passed in forty-four I did believe no more
sinners would be converted. But I never had a vision that no more sinners
would be converted. . . . I was shown that there was a great work to be done
in the world for those who had not had the light and rejected it. Our
brethren could not understand this with our faith in the immediate appearing
of Christ" (Letter 2, 1874, in Selected Messages, book 1, p. 74).

Her first vision (December 1844) portrayed the "Advent people" journeying
along a path to the Holy City with the light of the "midnight cry" behind
them, and entering the city at the Second Advent. This, to those who
accepted it, meant reassurance that the 1844 message and movement had not
been a delusion; or to put it another way, that the 2300 days had ended and
the parable, with its "shut door," had been fulfilled, and that very shortly
they would see their Lord, who was delaying His appearance to test their
faith.

Her view in February 1845 was in agreement with Edson's explanation--Christ,
the high priest, going from the holy place to the Most Holy Place, within
the veil, explained as His going to receive the kingdom after which He would
"return from the wedding" to receive His waiting ones at the Second Advent.
In 1847 she connected this entering of the Holy of Holies with the shutting
of the door.

Thus both Hiram Edson and Ellen Harmon taught that Christ's work in the
sanctuary had not ended, but was continuing in another phase. However, they
thought that this phase would represent only a brief period.

When in 1848 she described a vision depicting the future SDA publications as
"streams of light that went clear round the world," the little group could
not comprehend that there was either the time or the possibility for them to
bear a message to the world at large.

In 1849 Ellen White had a vision of the heavenly sanctuary that further
depicted the significance of the "open and shut door," in connection with
the Sabbath message and in connection with Rev. 3:7, 8 (see extract quoted
[p. 252] near the beginning of this article). The shutting of one door meant
the opening of another.

In 1850 James White reported the accession of one man who "had made no
public profession of religion" before 1845. By the next year there was a
noticeable change. In April, White stated that the door was shut to "those
who had heard the everlasting gospel message and rejected it," but he held
that the following classes may be converted: (1) "erring brethren" in the
Laodicean church (the majority group of ex-Millerites), (2) children now
coming to the age of accountability, and (3) "hidden souls" compared with
the biblical "seven thousand" who had "not bowed unto Baal" (1 Kings 19:18),
who would be converted in the future "in His own time," when they hear the
message; but at present, he said, the message was for those in the Laodicean
church (editorial note in Review and Herald 1:64, Apr. 7, 1851).

In September he reported some converts from this third class. In December G.
W. Holt, a fellow minister in New York, wrote that "in some places where but
a few months since there was seemingly no sign of there being one child of
God, they are now springing up." The next February White reported "many,"
and by May "a large portion," of those who had had no connection with the
1844 movement. These accessions seem to have changed the picture. White
wrote in February, setting forth a new view of the "shut door": "It however
represents an important event with which the church is connected, that was
to occur prior to our Lord's return from the wedding. That event shuts out
none of the honest children of God, neither those who have not wickedly
rejected the light of truth, and the influence of the Holy Spirit"
(editorial note 1 in Review and Herald 2:94, Feb. 17, 1852).

After quoting Isa. 22:22 and Rev. 3:7, 8 on the shut and open door, he
continued: "This Open Door we teach, and invite those who have an ear to
hear, to come to it and find salvation through Jesus Christ. There is an
exceeding glory in the view that Jesus has OPENED THE DOOR into the holiest
of all. . . . If it be said that we are of the OPEN DOOR and seventh day
Sabbath theory, we shall not object; for this is our faith" (ibid. 95).

The Timeliness of the Messages
The Practical Nature of the Messages

"Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the
feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. See that none
render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both
among yourselves, and to all men. Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In
every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus
concerning you. Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all
things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil.
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole
spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it" (1
Thess. 5:14-24).

From these verses we gather that the purpose of all Scripture is to prepare
a people who are blameless in body, soul, and spirit, and ready when the
Lord Jesus returns. This is the work of the prophets, and it has to do with
each of us personally and individually.

[109]

Therefore we must be clear as to the prophets themselves, and understand
their messages.

We have now examined the four Bible tests of the true prophet. Thus we have
done what this Scripture tells us to do-to test, to try, and to prove-and I
trust that we shall keep in mind these four tests as we read the instruction
and counsel given by the messenger of the Lord. A careful, intensive study
of the life and work of Ellen G. White brings us to the conclusion that she
met and fulfilled the four Bible tests.

In case more evidence is needed-and I think it is good to seek all that we
can find-I should like to present six types of evidence in addition to the
four tests that we have already discussed.

1.. The timeliness of the messages.
2.. The practical nature of the messages.
3.. The absolute certainty of the messages.
4.. The recognition accorded by contemporaries.
5.. The relation to outside influences.
6.. The physical phenomena attending the visions.
We need but to reach back into the busy life and prolific writings of Ellen
G. White to find any number of experiences, or evidences, that fall under
some one or all of these six types.

The Timeliness of the Messages
[Top of Document]
Time and again the counsel given by the Lord for some particular person
arrived at the exact moment when it was needed most. Too early, it would not
have

[110]

been appreciated; too late, it would not have served its purpose. This
placed a great responsibility upon the messenger of the Lord, for
procrastination would have meant the defeat of God's plans and purposes.
This often necessitated her rising very early, writing diligently hour after
hour, hurrying to the post office to make connections with a particular
train or boat. But the Lord saw to all these details, and the Lord's servant
responded to the call of her Master at any hour of the day or night.

In June, 1871, two of our ministers, J. N. Loughborough and a fellow
evangelist, began a tent effort in the city of San Francisco. In due time
the meetings were transferred from the tent to a hall, and by December 1,
1871, about fifty people had been baptized and brought into the church.

Much to the chagrin of the workers and believers and to the shame of the
cause of God, Elder Loughborough's fellow evangelist had fallen into some
questionable associations and actions. His conduct became such as to raise
serious questions as to his relationship to the church and certainly gave
rise to criticism by those opposing our work in that city. He took the
attitude that he had a right to do as he pleased, and to walk the streets as
he pleased and with whom he pleased.

When counseled and admonished by the brethren, his only response was, "It is
none of your business," which was of course not true, for it is the business
of

[111]

the church how you and I conduct ourselves and live our lives. On Sabbath,
January 27, 1872, it was decided that the church should investigate the
situation on Sunday, January 28, at 9 A.M.

As Elder Loughborough started for that Sunday morning meeting, he met the
brother on the sidewalk near the boardinghouse. He was weeping and gave
evidence of a broken spirit. Looking up, he said, "Brother Loughborough, I
am not going to the meeting today." "Not going to the meeting?" said Elder
Loughborough. "The meeting relates to your case."

"I know that," said he, "but I am all wrong. You are right in the position
you have taken in reference to me. Here is a letter of confession I have
written to the church; you take it and read it to them."

"What has occasioned this great change in you since yesterday?" inquired the
elder.

"I went to the post office last night, after the Sabbath, and received a
letter from Sister White, from Battle Creek, Michigan. It is a testimony she
has written out for me," he replied. "Read that, and you will see how the
Lord sees my case."

Now what would you do with such a testimony if you were in a similar
situation? I have held in my hand the handwritten original of that
testimony. It was mailed January 18, 1872. Very early that morning Sister
White was awakened in her room in Battle Creek. She was bidden to rise and
send the testimony of what she had seen in vision on December 10, 1871,
while

[112]

in Bordoville, Vermont. As long before as December 27 she had written out
what she had seen about this worker in San Francisco, but she had not mailed
it for the Lord had told her not to send it yet.

Without a moment's delay she rose, for she had been impressed to send out
that testimony to California immediately; in fact, to get it into the very
next mail, for it was needed. Just before breakfast she called her son
William and charged him, "Take this letter to the post office, but don't put
it into the drop. Hand it to the postmaster, and have him be sure to put it
into the mailbag that goes out this morning."

Thus this letter dated December 27 and mailed January 18 reached San
Francisco on January 27, when the worker in trouble needed it most urgently.
No, my brother, my sister, such things do not just happen. The very
timeliness of the messages is an evidence of their divine origin (J. N.
Loughborough, The Great Second Advent Movement, pp. 386, 390).

As he read the message it brought him, of course, to a realization that
there is a God in heaven who knew all about him and his doings. Yes, God
could see what he was doing, knew exactly where he was going, and with whom
he was associating, and the loving Father in heaven instructed His messenger
to write a message particularly for that young man. It made a profound
impression upon the young man's mind. It caused him to see his error and to
repent of his ways. He sat down immediately and wrote his letter of
confession,

[113]

admitting that there was no need for a church trial, for he recognized that
all he was doing was known to God, and had been revealed to the servant of
the Lord, though he was separated from her by more than two thousand miles.

I submit, dear brethren and sisters, that that kind of message could not
come from the mind, or the imagination, of just anybody, near or far. And I
also submit that for that message to arrive, not on January 29, or December
1, but on the very day, at the very moment, the message was needed, is but
another evidence that God was working through His servant, Ellen G. White.

May I add still another experience of a similar nature, and this one, I am
sure, may be known by some of our older workers, perhaps personally, even
intimately. In 1891, Ellen G. White was sent over to Australia to help in
the establishment of the institutions and our work in general. The
increasing demands of the work held her there for a considerable length of
time. While she was in Australia, the people in America were carrying on the
movement and doing the best they could under the circumstances. Of course,
everybody was interested in and concerned over the long absence of Mrs.
White.

In Battle Creek at that time, in the early 1890's, a young woman by the name
of Anna Philips claimed that she had had a vision, a revelation from the
Lord. At that time she was living in the home of one of our ministers. She
began to write out her messages, and

[114]

naturally some of our people were very much concerned. Some thought it only
reasonable that while Sister White was absent in Australia the Lord should
choose someone else to carry on her work in the United States. So they read
her messages with great interest, and some began to compare Sister White's
messages with the messages of Anna Philips.

About the middle of April A. T. Jones felt very much impressed that he
should preach a sermon about this in the Tabernacle on a Sabbath morning. He
came to that meeting with the message that God had chosen another messenger.
He made it clear that he did not think it necessarily true that the Lord
would speak through only one agent. He thought it possible that the Lord
would see fit to use many. Here was just another. He took a whole hour to
compare the work of Ellen G. White and the work of Anna Philips.

He read the messages, placed them side by side, and declared that they were
just the same, having the same ring, the same content, and that they were
written in almost the same language. This he proposed as evidence that God
had chosen another messenger. And so he urged the people of Battle Creek to
accept her as another of God's servants.

When the church service closed that morning you may be sure that quite a few
folks did not go home as readily as usual. They stood about in little
clusters outside the Tabernacle and talked about it, and wondered if it were
possible that God had sent them another

[115]

messenger. Some were very sure she was not called to speak for God. Others
questioned whether all the messages would be in harmony, or if there might
be some conflict between them. What would Sister White do about this? And
what would she say about it when she heard of the development there in
Battle Creek? These were some of the questions that disturbed them. They
were all excited and stirred up by the sermon.

The next morning, Sunday, A. T. Jones went over to the branch post office in
the Review and Herald. He stepped up to the window and asked if he had any
mail. A long envelope, rather big, postmarked Australia, was handed to him.
He opened it and read it right there in the post office. The date, of
course, was some weeks before the day on which the letter was received.

It came from Ellen G. White. We can give you just the substance of the
contents. She asked Elder Jones who appointed him to preach such a sermon as
he had preached in the Tabernacle, who gave him the authority to be judge in
such a matter as whether God had chosen another messenger, and why he had
stood before the people and compared the message of this one with the
messages that God had sent through her. She went on and outlined in detail
exactly what had happened on that particular Sabbath morning in the Battle
Creek Tabernacle. She made it plain that God had not called Anna Philips to
the prophetic office. She pleaded with him not to do anything that would
hinder

[116]

or thwart or confuse the people of God. It was a very powerful message, very
direct, and very timely.

As the preacher sat there on the bench in the post office looking at this
message and reading it, there was a young man standing nearby who had come
to write a postcard home. When he saw Elder Jones sitting on the bench, he
took a little extra time to write, but of course he was observing what was
going on.

Just then Elder O. A. Tait came in and Elder Jones called him to come over
and sit down.

"Oscar," he said, "you heard me preach that sermon yesterday?"

When he got an affirmative reply, he said, "Read this," and handed over Mrs.
White's letter, dated March 15. After a few moments of silence, he asked,
"Who told Mrs. White a month ago that I was going to preach that sermon
about Anna Philips as a prophetess?"

"Ah, you know, Alonzo," replied Elder Tait.

"Yes, I do know. God knew what I would do."

Only the God in heaven knows our thoughts afar off, before they pass through
our minds. Only the God of heaven knows where we are and what we are doing
and all about us. He knows. Can you deny that the God in heaven sent that
message to Ellen G. White in Australia so long before and so far away, and
that He had anything to do with the fact that the message arrived there on
that particular day?

The next Sabbath morning A. T. Jones was back

[117]

in the pulpit at the Battle Creek Tabernacle, and he gave his message. It
was a powerful sermon. In it he acknowledged that only the God in heaven
knows a man's thoughts a month or two before he thinks them, and only the
God in heaven has the power to put those thoughts into the mind of another
person thousands of miles away before the man himself thinks them.

Think now of the timeliness of that message. Here again we bring from the
life and works of Ellen G. White an experience that certainly proves to us
that such messages were not due to any stretch of her imagination. A mere
religious reverie could not bring to pass such an experience as that. No,
brethren and sisters, when we come to think of these marvelous things that
have taken place in the life of Ellen G. White, we stand very humbly and
say, "God, if you know us as well and as intimately as you knew A. T. Jones
and the young man who was working with Elder Loughborough in San Francisco,
then we are convinced that we ought to be the kind of men you want us to
be."

The Practical Nature of the Messages
[Top of Document]
The practical nature of Ellen G. White's messages may well be illustrated by
one of her experiences in Australia. She went there to help lay solid
foundations for the building of our work in that part of the world. Being a
great believer in youth as God's heritage in the church, and realizing that
trained leadership for the church of tomorrow depends upon the training of
boys

[118]

and girls of today, she at once proposed the founding of a college, a
Seventh-day Adventist training center-and this was to be not just another
college, but an institution such as God had shown her to be His kind of
school.

How impossible it seemed for our few, poor church members in Australia to
carry out such a plan! But there was the counsel given as instruction from
the Lord. Not all the Australian brethren were convinced that the plan was a
wise one, and some gave expression to their feelings. W. C. White wrote of
this attitude:

"'One day an influential and talented member of the Melbourne church, after
listening to our plans for the establishment of such a school as we had at
Healdsburg, said to me, "Brother White, this plan of building such a school
is not an Australian plan at all, the demand for having such a school is not
an Australian demand. The idea of establishing a school at this time, when
our cause is so young and weak, is not an Australian idea."'"-Quoted in
Divine Predictions of Mrs. Ellen G. White Fulfilled, compiled by F. C.
Gilbert, p. 340.

All of which was perfectly true and obvious. Neither was it Ellen G. White's
plan or idea, but rather both plan and idea were God's. Australia had
colleges and universities-good ones-but the kind of school that God wanted
established in Australia was not just an ordinary one. He knew exactly the
kind of school that He wanted established in that country, and for that
reason He sent His messenger there to direct the minds of the people in the
achievement of His purpose.

[119]

As Sister White went on to describe the school to be established, the
Australian brethren shook their heads, and some of them came to a conclusion
that she was all wrong.

It was not an Australian idea; it was God's. It was not an Australian
demand; it was God's plan. It was, therefore, what God wanted as expressed
through His servant, Ellen G. White.

I think, dear friends, there is something here that all of us should catch
as significant. We are following not man's ideas, not man's plans; but God's
ideas, and God's plans. The closer we follow the pattern, the nearer we
shall come to carrying out the specifications for the building of God's
kingdom, and the greater will be the blessing that rests upon us as we carry
out God's plans. I hope all of us will ever bear in mind that this work is
not our work. The success or failure of this work does not depend entirely
upon us or upon our efforts. God will see His work through to a successful
conclusion. You and I might stand in His way a bit and hinder His plans for
a while but not for long. God will finish His work and He will see it done
in His own time and way.

The brethren in Australia looked at one another and wondered, "Where shall
we find the kind of place that she wants us to use for such a school?"
Sister White was sure that God had a place somewhere there in Australia. She
suggested that they should look for a farm away from the city. So they
appointed a

[120]

committee to search for a suitable area, but each time they returned with
the report that the price was far beyond their financial resources.

In due time the committee found a block of 1,500 acres near Cooranbong, some
seventy-five miles north of Sydney. It had but one commendatory feature-it
was cheap at $3 an acre. That price would and could buy only "poor, sandy,
and hungry" land. The committee members were disappointed, but it seemed to
be the best they could find within their financial resources.

They decided to request a government agricultural expert to visit the land
and give his frank and honest appraisal of it. His comment was that the land
was so poor that if a bandicoot wanted to cross the 1,500 acres he would
have to take with him his lunch in a basket, for there would be nothing for
him to eat. This did not bring much courage to the brethren. It was felt
that Sister White should join the group in their final visit to the property
for the purpose of making the decision.

From several sources we put the story together. It seems that part of the
committee went ahead, leaving Sister White to make the journey with Elder
and Mrs. G. B. Starr. On the train she told the Starrs of her dream in which
she and they were standing on the piece of property, looking it over, and
came upon a neat-cut furrow about one quarter of a yard deep and two yards
in length. She saw two of the brethren, who

[121]

had grown up with the Iowa type of rich, deep soil, standing by the furrow
and saying, "This is not good land; the soil is not favorable." As they
spoke these words Sister White was told by One who had often given her
counsel, "False witness has been borne of this land," and He explained the
value of the different strata in the soil and their use.

In due time she and her party arrived at Cooranbong, and they looked over
the estate without reaching a decision that day. The next morning, May 25,
1894, the whole group met in a fisherman's hut for a season of prayer.
Sister White felt a burden to pray for divine healing to come to Brother
McCullogh's tuberculosis-weakened body. As she prayed for him, he felt a
sensation like an electric wave pass through his whole body, and he rose
from that season of prayer a completely restored man. He lived for more than
thirty-five years after this experience.

This manifestation of the divine presence assured them all of divine
guidance in the decision to be made that day. The group scattered out to
examine further the various parts of the property. The Starrs and Sister
White walked over the place and came upon a spot where a neat-cut furrow had
been plowed one quarter of a yard deep and two yards in length. As they
stood there looking at the turned-up soil, two brethren came upon them from
different directions. On seeing Sister White they remarked, "This is not
good land; the soil is not favorable."

[122]

Sister White then told them of her dream and of the fulfillment. With this
evidence and evidence of the presence and the power of God as seen in the
healing of Brother McCullogh, they decided to take the place, and made a
down payment.

In the spring of 1895 the place was bought on the advice of the Lord and in
spite of the expert's adverse report. To show her own confidence in what God
had revealed to her, Sister White selected sixty-six acres of the same land,
moved into a few tents, and began work on her place, which she called
"Sunnyside." She demonstrated that with proper cultivation the land would
produce abundantly-and so it has all these years-a splendid harvest of fruit
and vegetables and of fine Seventh-day Adventist youth to be workers in the
great harvest fields.

I have never been there myself, but I have seen pictures of it. It is a
lovely place with beautiful green grass, wonderful flowers and trees, the
finest kinds of fruit trees. I tell you, dear friends, the messages that
came from the servant of the Lord were down-to-earth, practical messages.
Sometimes we have not been able to see the wisdom of the message or the
counsel, and yet when our people have followed the instruction given we have
made no mistakes. It is when we have failed to follow the instruction that
we have made mistakes. The very practical nature of all the messages given
through the servant of the Lord must appeal to us as another evidence that
God is in her work.

The great controversy between Christ and Satan, that has been carried
forward for nearly six thousand years, is soon to close; and the wicked one
redoubles his efforts to defeat the work of Christ in man's behalf and to
fasten souls in his snares. To hold the people in darkness and impenitence
till the Saviour's mediation is ended, and there is no longer a sacrifice
for sin, is the object which he seeks to accomplish.

When there is no special effort made to resist his power, when indifference
prevails in the church and the world, Satan is not concerned; for he is in
no danger of losing those whom he is leading captive at his will. But when
the attention is called to eternal things, and souls are inquiring, "What
must I do to be saved?" he is on the ground, seeking to match his power
against the power of Christ and to counteract the influence of the Holy
Spirit.

The Scriptures declare that upon one occasion, when the angels of God came
to present themselves before the Lord, Satan came also among them (Job 1:6),
not to bow before the Eternal King, but to further his own malicious designs
against the righteous. With the same object he is in attendance when men
assemble for the worship of God. Though hidden from sight, he is working
with all diligence to control the minds of the worshipers. Like a skillful
general he lays his plans beforehand. As he sees the messenger of God
searching the Scriptures, he takes note of the subject to be

519

presented to the people. Then he employs all his cunning and shrewdness so
to control circumstances that the message may not reach those whom he is
deceiving on that very point. The one who most needs the warning will be
urged into some business transaction which requires his presence, or will by
some other means be prevented from hearing the words that might prove to him
a savor of life unto life.

Again, Satan sees the Lord's servants burdened because of the spiritual
darkness that enshrouds the people. He hears their earnest prayers for
divine grace and power to break the spell of indifference, carelessness, and
indolence. Then with renewed zeal he plies his arts. He tempts men to the
indulgence of appetite or to some other form of self-gratification, and thus
benumbs their sensibilities so that they fail to hear the very things which
they most need to learn.

Satan well knows that all whom he can lead to neglect prayer and the
searching of the Scriptures, will be overcome by his attacks. Therefore he
invents every possible device to engross the mind. There has ever been a
class professing godliness, who, instead of following on to know the truth,
make it their religion to seek some fault of character or error of faith in
those with whom they do not agree. Such are Satan's right-hand helpers.
Accusers of the brethren are not few, and they are always active when God is
at work and His servants are rendering Him true homage. They will put a
false coloring upon the words and acts of those who love and obey the truth.
They will represent the most earnest, zealous, self-denying servants of
Christ as deceived or deceivers. It is their work to misrepresent the
motives of every true and noble deed, to circulate insinuations, and arouse
suspicion in the minds of the inexperienced. In every conceivable manner
they will seek to cause that which is pure and righteous to be regarded as
foul and deceptive.

But none need be deceived concerning them. It may be readily seen whose
children they are, whose example they follow, and whose work they do. "Ye
shall know them by

520

their fruits." Matthew 7:16. Their course resembles that of Satan, the
envenomed slanderer, "the accuser of our brethren." Revelation 12:10.

The great deceiver has many agents ready to present any and every kind of
error to ensnare souls--heresies prepared to suit the varied tastes and
capacities of those whom he would ruin. It is his plan to bring into the
church insincere, unregenerate elements that will encourage doubt and
unbelief, and hinder all who desire to see the work of God advance and to
advance with it. Many who have no real faith in God or in His word assent to
some principles of truth and pass as Christians, and thus they are enabled
to introduce their errors as Scriptural doctrines.

The position that it is of no consequence what men believe is one of Satan's
most successful deceptions. He knows that the truth, received in the love of
it, sanctifies the soul of the receiver; therefore he is constantly seeking
to substitute false theories, fables, another gospel. From the beginning the
servants of God have contended against false teachers, not merely as vicious
men, but as inculcators of falsehoods that were fatal to the soul. Elijah,
Jeremiah, Paul, firmly and fearlessly opposed those who were turning men
from the word of God. That liberality which regards a correct religious
faith as unimportant found no favor with these holy defenders of the truth.

The vague and fanciful interpretations of Scripture, and the many
conflicting theories concerning religious faith, that are found in the
Christian world are the work of our great adversary to confuse minds so that
they shall not discern the truth. And the discord and division which exist
among the churches of Christendom are in a great measure due to the
prevailing custom of wresting the Scriptures to support a favorite theory.
Instead of carefully studying God's word with humility of heart to obtain a
knowledge of His will, many seek only to discover something odd or original.

521

In order to sustain erroneous doctrines or unchristian practices, some will
seize upon passages of Scripture separated from the context, perhaps quoting
half of a single verse as proving their point, when the remaining portion
would show the meaning to be quite the opposite. With the cunning of the
serpent they entrench themselves behind disconnected utterances construed to
suit their carnal desires. Thus do many willfully pervert the word of God.
Others, who have an active imagination, seize upon the figures and symbols
of Holy Writ, interpret them to suit their fancy, with little regard to the
testimony of Scripture as its own interpreter, and then they present their
vagaries as the teachings of the Bible.

Whenever the study of the Scriptures is entered upon without a prayerful,
humble, teachable spirit, the plainest and simplest as well as the most
difficult passages will be wrested from their true meaning. The papal
leaders select such portions of Scripture as best serve their purpose,
interpret to suit themselves, and then present these to the people, while
they deny them the privilege of studying the Bible and understanding its
sacred truths for themselves. The whole Bible should be given to the people
just as it reads. It would be better for them not to have Bible instruction
at all than to have the teaching of the Scriptures thus grossly
misrepresented.

The Bible was designed to be a guide to all who wish to become acquainted
with the will of their Maker. God gave to men the sure word of prophecy;
angels and even Christ Himself came to make known to Daniel and John the
things that must shortly come to pass. Those important matters that concern
our salvation were not left involved in mystery. They were not revealed in
such a way as to perplex and mislead the honest seeker after truth. Said the
Lord by the prophet Habakkuk: "Write the vision, and make it plain, . . .
that he may run that readeth it." Habakkuk 2:2. The word of God is plain to
all who study it with a prayerful

522

heart. Every truly honest soul will come to the light of truth. "Light is
sown for the righteous." Psalm 97:11. And no church can advance in holiness
unless its members are earnestly seeking for truth as for hid treasure.

By the cry, Liberality, men are blinded to the devices of their adversary,
while he is all the time working steadily for the accomplishment of his
object. As he succeeds in supplanting the Bible by human speculations, the
law of God is set aside, and the churches are under the bondage of sin while
they claim to be free.

To many, scientific research has become a curse. God has permitted a flood
of light to be poured upon the world in discoveries in science and art; but
even the greatest minds, if not guided by the word of God in their research,
become bewildered in their attempts to investigate the relations of science
and revelation.

Human knowledge of both material and spiritual things is partial and
imperfect; therefore many are unable to harmonize their views of science
with Scripture statements. Many accept mere theories and speculations as
scientific facts, and they think that God's word is to be tested by the
teachings of "science falsely so called." 1 Timothy 6:20. The Creator and
His works are beyond their comprehension; and because they cannot explain
these by natural laws, Bible history is regarded as unreliable. Those who
doubt the reliability of the records of the Old and New Testaments too often
go a step further and doubt the existence of God and attribute infinite
power to nature. Having let go their anchor, they are left to beat about
upon the rocks of infidelity.

Thus many err from the faith and are seduced by the devil. Men have
endeavored to be wiser than their Creator; human philosophy has attempted to
search out and explain mysteries which will never be revealed through the
eternal ages. If men would but search and understand what God had made known
of Himself and His purposes, they would obtain such a view of the glory,
majesty, and power of Jehovah that

523

they would realize their own littleness and would be content with that which
has been revealed for themselves and their children.

It is a masterpiece of Satan's deceptions to keep the minds of men searching
and conjecturing in regard to that which God has not made known and which He
does not intend that we shall understand. It was thus that Lucifer lost his
place in heaven. He became dissatisfied because all the secrets of God's
purposes were not confided to him, and he entirely disregarded that which
was revealed concerning his own work in the lofty position assigned him. By
arousing the same discontent in the angels under his command, he caused
their fall. Now he seeks to imbue the minds of men with the same spirit and
to lead them also to disregard the direct commands of God.

Those who are unwilling to accept the plain, cutting truths of the Bible are
continually seeking for pleasing fables that will quiet the conscience. The
less spiritual, self-denying, and humiliating the doctrines presented, the
greater the favor with which they are received. These persons degrade the
intellectual powers to serve their carnal desires. Too wise in their own
conceit to search the Scriptures with contrition of soul and earnest prayer
for divine guidance, they have no shield from delusion. Satan is ready to
supply the heart's desire, and he palms off his deceptions in the place of
truth. It was thus that the papacy gained its power over the minds of men;
and by rejection of the truth because it involves a cross, Protestants are
following the same path. All who neglect the word of God to study
convenience and policy, that they may not be at variance with the world,
will be left to receive damnable heresy for religious truth. Every
conceivable form of error will be accepted by those who willfully reject the
truth. He who looks with horror upon one deception will readily receive
another. The apostle Paul, speaking of a class who "received not the love of
the truth, that they might be saved," declares: "For this cause God shall
send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: that they

524

all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in
unrighteousness." 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12. With such a warning before us it
behooves us to be on our guard as to what doctrines we receive.

Among the most successful agencies of the great deceiver are the delusive
teachings and lying wonders of spiritualism. Disguised as an angel of light,
he spreads his nets where least suspected. If men would but study the Book
of God with earnest prayer that they might understand it, they would not be
left in darkness to receive false doctrines. But as they reject the truth
they fall a prey to deception.

Another dangerous error is the doctrine that denies the deity of Christ,
claiming that He had no existence before His advent to this world. This
theory is received with favor by a large class who profess to believe the
Bible; yet it directly contradicts the plainest statements of our Saviour
concerning His relationship with the Father, His divine character, and His
pre-existence. It cannot be entertained without the most unwarranted
wresting of the Scriptures. It not only lowers man's conceptions of the work
of redemption, but undermines faith in the Bible as a revelation from God.
While this renders it the more dangerous, it makes it also harder to meet.
If men reject the testimony of the inspired Scriptures concerning the deity
of Christ, it is in vain to argue the point with them; for no argument,
however conclusive, could convince them. "The natural man receiveth not the
things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can
he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." 1 Corinthians 2:14.
None who hold this error can have a true conception of the character or the
mission of Christ, or of the great plan of God for man's redemption.

Still another subtle and mischievous error is the fast-spreading belief that
Satan has no existence as a personal being; that the name is used in
Scripture merely to represent men's evil thoughts and desires.

525

The teaching so widely echoed from popular pulpits, that the second advent
of Christ is His coming to each individual at death, is a device to divert
the minds of men from His personal coming in the clouds of heaven. For years
Satan has thus been saying, "Behold, He is in the secret chambers" (Matthew
24:23-26); and many souls have been lost by accepting this deception.

Again, worldly wisdom teaches that prayer is not essential. Men of science
claim that there can be no real answer to prayer; that this would be a
violation of law, a miracle, and that miracles have no existence. The
universe, say they, is governed by fixed laws, and God Himself does nothing
contrary to these laws. Thus they represent God as bound by His own laws--as
if the operation of divine laws could exclude divine freedom. Such teaching
is opposed to the testimony of the Scriptures. Were not miracles wrought by
Christ and His apostles? The same compassionate Saviour lives today, and He
is as willing to listen to the prayer of faith as when He walked visibly
among men. The natural cooperates with the supernatural. It is a part of
God's plan to grant us, in answer to the prayer of faith, that which He
would not bestow did we not thus ask.

Innumerable are the erroneous doctrines and fanciful ideas that are
obtaining among the churches of Christendom. It is impossible to estimate
the evil results of removing one of the landmarks fixed by the word of God.
Few who venture to do this stop with the rejection of a single truth. The
majority continue to set aside one after another of the principles of truth,
until they become actual infidels.

The errors of popular theology have driven many a soul to skepticism who
might otherwise have been a believer in the Scriptures. It is impossible for
him to accept doctrines which outrage his sense of justice, mercy, and
benevolence; and since these are represented as the teaching of the Bible,
he refuses to receive it as the word of God.

526

And this is the object which Satan seeks to accomplish. There is nothing
that he desires more than to destroy confidence in God and in His word.
Satan stands at the head of the great army of doubters, and he works to the
utmost of his power to beguile souls into his ranks. It is becoming
fashionable to doubt. There is a large class by whom the word of God is
looked upon with distrust for the same reason as was its Author--because it
reproves and condemns sin. Those who are unwilling to obey its requirements
endeavor to overthrow its authority. They read the Bible, or listen to its
teachings as presented from the sacred desk, merely to find fault with the
Scriptures or with the sermon. Not a few become infidels in order to justify
or excuse themselves in neglect of duty. Others adopt skeptical principles
from pride and indolence. Too ease-loving to distinguish themselves by
accomplishing anything worthy of honor, which requires effort and
self-denial, they aim to secure a reputation for superior wisdom by
criticizing the Bible. There is much which the finite mind, unenlightened by
divine wisdom, is powerless to comprehend; and thus they find occasion to
criticize. There are many who seem to feel that it is a virtue to stand on
the side of unbelief, skepticism, and infidelity. But underneath an
appearance of candor it will be found that such persons are actuated by
self-confidence and pride. Many delight in finding something in the
Scriptures to puzzle the minds of others. Some at first criticize and reason
on the wrong side, from a mere love of controversy. They do not realize that
they are thus entangling themselves in the snare of the fowler. But having
openly expressed unbelief, they feel that they must maintain their position.
Thus they unite with the ungodly and close to themselves the gates of
Paradise.

God has given in His word sufficient evidence of its divine character. The
great truths which concern our redemption are clearly presented. By the aid
of the Holy Spirit, which is promised to all who seek it in sincerity, every
man may

527

understand these truths for himself. God has granted to men a strong
foundation upon which to rest their faith.

Yet the finite minds of men are inadequate fully to comprehend the plans and
purposes of the Infinite One. We can never by searching find out God. We
must not attempt to lift with presumptuous hand the curtain behind which He
veils His majesty. The apostle exclaims: "How unsearchable are His
judgments, and His ways past finding out!" Romans 11:33. We can so far
comprehend His dealings with us, and the motives by which He is actuated,
that we may discern boundless love and mercy united to infinite power. Our
Father in heaven orders everything in wisdom and righteousness, and we are
not to be dissatisfied and distrustful, but to bow in reverent submission.
He will reveal to us as much of His purposes as it is for our good to know,
and beyond that we must trust the Hand that is omnipotent, the Heart that is
full of love.

While God has given ample evidence for faith, He will never remove all
excuse for unbelief. All who look for hooks to hang their doubts upon will
find them. And those who refuse to accept and obey God's word until every
objection has been removed, and there is no longer an opportunity for doubt,
will never come to the light.

Distrust of God is the natural outgrowth of the unrenewed heart, which is at
enmity with Him. But faith is inspired by the Holy Spirit, and it will
flourish only as it is cherished. No man can become strong in faith without
a determined effort. Unbelief strengthens as it is encouraged; and if men,
instead of dwelling upon the evidences which God has given to sustain their
faith, permit themselves to question and cavil, they will find their doubts
constantly becoming more confirmed.

But those who doubt God's promises and distrust the assurance of His grace
are dishonoring Him; and their influence, instead of drawing others to
Christ, tends to repel

528

them from Him. They are unproductive trees, that spread their dark branches
far and wide, shutting away the sunlight from other plants, and causing them
to droop and die under the chilling shadow. The lifework of these persons
will appear as a never-ceasing witness against them. They are sowing seeds
of doubt and skepticism that will yield an unfailing harvest.

There is but one course for those to pursue who honestly desire to be freed
from doubts. Instead of questioning and caviling concerning that which they
do not understand, let them give heed to the light which already shines upon
them, and they will receive greater light. Let them do every duty which has
been made plain to their understanding, and they will be enabled to
understand and perform those of which they are now in doubt.

Satan can present a counterfeit so closely resembling the truth that it
deceives those who are willing to be deceived, who desire to shun the
self-denial and sacrifice demanded by the truth; but it is impossible for
him to hold under his power one soul who honestly desires, at whatever cost,
to know the truth. Christ is the truth and the "Light, which lighteth every
man that cometh into the world." John 1:9. The Spirit of truth has been sent
to guide men into all truth. And upon the authority of the Son of God it is
declared: "Seek, and ye shall find." "If any man will do His will, he shall
know of the doctrine." Matthew 7:7; John 7:17.

The followers of Christ know little of the plots which Satan and his hosts
are forming against them. But He who sitteth in the heavens will overrule
all these devices for the accomplishment of His deep designs. The Lord
permits His people to be subjected to the fiery ordeal of temptation, not
because He takes pleasure in their distress and affliction, but because this
process is essential to their final victory. He could not, consistently with
His own glory, shield them from temptation; for the very object of the trial
is to prepare them to resist all the allurements of evil.

529

Neither wicked men nor devils can hinder the work of God, or shut out His
presence from His people, if they will, with subdued, contrite hearts,
confess and put away their sins, and in faith claim His promises. Every
temptation, every opposing influence, whether open or secret, may be
successfully resisted, "not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith
the Lord of hosts." Zechariah 4:6.

"The eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and His ears are open unto
their prayers. . . . And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of
that which is good?" 1 Peter 3:12, 13. When Balaam, allured by the promise
of rich rewards, practiced enchantments against Israel, and by sacrifices to
the Lord sought to invoke a curse upon His people, the Spirit of God forbade
the evil which he longed to pronounce, and Balaam was forced to exclaim:
"How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the
Lord hath not defied?" "Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my
last end be like his!" When sacrifice had again been offered, the ungodly
prophet declared: "Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and He hath
blessed; and I cannot reverse it. He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob,
neither hath He seen perverseness in Israel: the Lord his God is with him,
and the shout of a King is among them." "Surely there is no enchantment
against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to
this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!"
Yet a third time altars were erected, and again Balaam essayed to secure a
curse. But from the unwilling lips of the prophet, the Spirit of God
declared the prosperity of His chosen, and rebuked the folly and malice of
their foes: "Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth
thee." Numbers 23:8, 10, 20, 21, 23; 24:9.

The people of Israel were at this time loyal to God; and so long as they
continued in obedience to His law, no power in earth or hell could prevail
against them. But the curse which Balaam had not been permitted to pronounce
against

530

God's people, he finally succeeded in bringing upon them by seducing them
into sin. When they transgressed God's commandments, then they separated
themselves from Him, and they were left to feel the power of the destroyer.

Satan is well aware that the weakest soul who abides in Christ is more than
a match for the hosts of darkness, and that, should he reveal himself
openly, he would be met and resisted. Therefore he seeks to draw away the
soldiers of the cross from their strong fortification, while he lies in
ambush with his forces, ready to destroy all who venture upon his ground.
Only in humble reliance upon God, and obedience to all His commandments, can
we be secure.

No man is safe for a day or an hour without prayer. Especially should we
entreat the Lord for wisdom to understand His word. Here are revealed the
wiles of the tempter and the means by which he may be successfully resisted.
Satan is an expert in quoting Scripture, placing his own interpretation upon
passages, by which he hopes to cause us to stumble. We should study the
Bible with humility of heart, never losing sight of our dependence upon God.
While we must constantly guard against the devices of Satan, we should pray
in faith continually: "Lead us not into temptation."

The connection of the visible with the invisible world, the ministration of
angels of God, and the agency of evil spirits, are plainly revealed in the
Scriptures, and inseparably interwoven with human history. There is a
growing tendency to disbelief in the existence of evil spirits, while the
holy angels that "minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation"
(Hebrews 1:14) are regarded by many as spirits of the dead. But the
Scriptures not only teach the existence of angels, both good and evil, but
present unquestionable proof that these are not disembodied spirits of dead
men.

Before the creation of man, angels were in existence; for when the
foundations of the earth were laid, "the morning stars sang together, and
all the sons of God shouted for joy." Job 38:7. After the fall of man,
angels were sent to guard the tree of life, and this before a human being
had died. Angels are in nature superior to men, for the psalmist says that
man was made "a little lower than the angels." Psalm 8:5.

We are informed in Scripture as to the number, and the power and glory, of
the heavenly beings, of their connection with the government of God, and
also of their relation to the work of redemption. "The Lord hath prepared
His throne in the heavens; and His kingdom ruleth over all." And, says the
prophet, "I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne." In the
presence chamber of the King of kings

512

they wait--"angels, that excel in strength," "ministers of His, that do His
pleasure," "hearkening unto the voice of His word." Psalm 103:19-21;
Revelation 5:11. Ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands,
were the heavenly messengers beheld by the prophet Daniel. The apostle Paul
declared them "an innumerable company." Daniel 7:10; Hebrews 12:22. As God's
messengers they go forth, like "the appearance of a flash of lightning,"
(Ezekiel 1:14), so dazzling their glory, and so swift their flight. The
angel that appeared at the Saviour's tomb, his countenance "like lightning,
and his raiment white as snow," caused the keepers for fear of him to quake,
and they "became as dead men." Matthew 28:3, 4. When Sennacherib, the
haughty Assyrian, reproached and blasphemed God, and threatened Israel with
destruction, "it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went
out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five
thousand." There were "cut off all the mighty men of valor, and the leaders
and captains," from the army of Sennacherib. "So he returned with shame of
face to his own land." 2 Kings 19:35; 2 Chronicles 32:21.

Angels are sent on missions of mercy to the children of God. To Abraham,
with promises of blessing; to the gates of Sodom, to rescue righteous Lot
from its fiery doom; to Elijah, as he was about to perish from weariness and
hunger in the desert; to Elisha, with chariots and horses of fire
surrounding the little town where he was shut in by his foes; to Daniel,
while seeking divine wisdom in the court of a heathen king, or abandoned to
become the lions' prey; to Peter, doomed to death in Herod's dungeon; to the
prisoners at Philippi; to Paul and his companions in the night of tempest on
the sea; to open the mind of Cornelius to receive the gospel; to dispatch
Peter with the message of salvation to the Gentile stranger--thus holy
angels have, in all ages, ministered to God's people.

A guardian angel is appointed to every follower of Christ. These heavenly
watchers shield the righteous from the power

513

of the wicked one. This Satan himself recognized when he said: "Doth Job
fear God for nought? Hast not Thou made an hedge about him, and about his
house, and about all that he hath on every side?" Job 1:9, 10. The agency by
which God protects His people is presented in the words of the psalmist:
"The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear Him, and
delivereth them." Psalm 34:7. Said the Saviour, speaking of those that
believe in Him: "Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for
I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of My
Father." Matthew 18:10. The angels appointed to minister to the children of
God have at all times access to His presence.

Thus God's people, exposed to the deceptive power and unsleeping malice of
the prince of darkness, and in conflict with all the forces of evil, are
assured of the unceasing guardianship of heavenly angels. Nor is such
assurance given without need. If God has granted to His children promise of
grace and protection, it is because there are mighty agencies of evil to be
met--agencies numerous, determined, and untiring, of whose malignity and
power none can safely be ignorant or unheeding.

Evil spirits, in the beginning created sinless, were equal in nature, power,
and glory with the holy beings that are now God's messengers. But fallen
through sin, they are leagued together for the dishonor of God and the
destruction of men. United with Satan in his rebellion, and with him cast
out from heaven, they have, through all succeeding ages, co-operated with
him in his warfare against the divine authority. We are told in Scripture of
their confederacy and government, of their various orders, of their
intelligence and subtlety, and of their malicious designs against the peace
and happiness of men.

Old Testament history presents occasional mention of their existence and
agency; but it was during the time when Christ was upon the earth that evil
spirits manifested their power in the most striking manner. Christ had come
to enter

514

upon the plan devised for man's redemption, and Satan determined to assert
his right to control the world. He had succeeded in establishing idolatry in
every part of the earth except the land of Palestine. To the only land that
had not fully yielded to the tempter's sway, Christ came to shed upon the
people the light of heaven. Here two rival powers claimed supremacy. Jesus
was stretching out His arms of love, inviting all who would to find pardon
and peace in Him. The hosts of darkness saw that they did not possess
unlimited control, and they understood that if Christ's mission should be
successful, their rule was soon to end. Satan raged like a chained lion and
defiantly exhibited his power over the bodies as well as the souls of men.

The fact that men have been possessed with demons, is clearly stated in the
New Testament. The persons thus afflicted were not merely suffering with
disease from natural causes. Christ had perfect understanding of that with
which He was dealing, and He recognized the direct presence and agency of
evil spirits.

A striking example of their number, power, and malignity, and also of the
power and mercy of Christ, is given in the Scripture account of the healing
of the demoniacs at Gadara. Those wretched maniacs, spurning all restraint,
writhing, foaming, raging, were filling the air with their cries, doing
violence to themselves, and endangering all who should approach them. Their
bleeding and disfigured bodies and distracted minds presented a spectacle
well pleasing to the prince of darkness. One of the demons controlling the
sufferers declared: "My name is Legion: for we are many." Mark 5:9. In the
Roman army a legion consisted of from three to five thousand men. Satan's
hosts also are marshaled in companies, and the single company to which these
demons belonged numbered no less than a legion.

At the command of Jesus the evil spirits departed from their victims,
leaving them calmly sitting at the Saviour's feet, subdued, intelligent, and
gentle. But the demons were

515

permitted to sweep a herd of swine into the sea; and to the dwellers of
Gadara the loss of these outweighed the blessings which Christ had bestowed,
and the divine Healer was entreated to depart. This was the result which
Satan designed to secure. By casting the blame of their loss upon Jesus, he
aroused the selfish fears of the people and prevented them from listening to
His words. Satan is constantly accusing Christians as the cause of loss,
misfortune, and suffering, instead of allowing the reproach to fall where it
belongs--upon himself and his agents.

But the purposes of Christ were not thwarted. He allowed the evil spirits to
destroy the herd of swine as a rebuke to those Jews who were raising these
unclean beasts for the sake of gain. Had not Christ restrained the demons,
they would have plunged into the sea, not only the swine, but also their
keepers and owners. The preservation of both the keepers and the owners was
due alone to His power, mercifully exercised for their deliverance.
Furthermore, this event was permitted to take place that the disciples might
witness the cruel power of Satan upon both man and beast. The Saviour
desired His followers to have a knowledge of the foe whom they were to meet,
that they might not be deceived and overcome by his devices. It was also His
will that the people of that region should behold His power to break the
bondage of Satan and release his captives. And though Jesus Himself
departed, the men so marvelously delivered, remained to declare the mercy of
their Benefactor.

Other instances of a similar nature are recorded in the Scriptures. The
daughter of the Syrophoenician woman was grievously vexed with a devil, whom
Jesus cast out by His word. (Mark 7:26-30). "One possessed with a devil,
blind, and dumb" (Matthew 12:22); a youth who had a dumb spirit, that
ofttimes "cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him" (Mark
9:17-27); the maniac who, tormented by "a spirit of an unclean devil" (Luke
4:33-36), disturbed the Sabbath quiet of the synagogue at Capernaum--all
were

516

healed by the compassionate Saviour. In nearly every instance, Christ
addressed the demon as an intelligent entity, commanding him to come out of
his victim and to torment him no more. The worshipers at Capernaum,
beholding His mighty power, "were all amazed, and spake among themselves,
saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power He commandeth the
unclean spirits, and they come out." Luke 4:36.

Those possessed with devils are usually represented as being in a condition
of great suffering; yet there were exceptions to this rule. For the sake of
obtaining supernatural power, some welcomed the satanic influence. These of
course had no conflict with the demons. Of this class were those who
possessed the spirit of divination,--Simon Magus, Elymas the sorcerer, and
the damsel who followed Paul and Silas at Philippi.

None are in greater danger from the influence of evil spirits than those
who, notwithstanding the direct and ample testimony of the Scriptures, deny
the existence and agency of the devil and his angels. So long as we are
ignorant of their wiles, they have almost inconceivable advantage; many give
heed to their suggestions while they suppose themselves to be following the
dictates of their own wisdom. This is why, as we approach the close of time,
when Satan is to work with greatest power to deceive and destroy, he spreads
everywhere the belief that he does not exist. It is his policy to conceal
himself and his manner of working.

There is nothing that the great deceiver fears so much as that we shall
become acquainted with his devices. The better to disguise his real
character and purposes, he has caused himself to be so represented as to
excite no stronger emotion than ridicule or contempt. He is well pleased to
be painted as a ludicrous or loathsome object, misshapen, half animal and
half human. He is pleased to hear his name used in sport and mockery by
those who think themselves intelligent and well informed.

517

It is because he has masked himself with consummate skill that the question
is so widely asked: "Does such a being really exist?" It is an evidence of
his success that theories giving the lie to the plainest testimony of the
Scriptures are so generally received in the religious world. And it is
because Satan can most readily control the minds of those who are
unconscious of his influence, that the word of God gives us so many examples
of his malignant work, unveiling before us his secret forces, and thus
placing us on our guard against his assaults.

The power and malice of Satan and his host might justly alarm us were it not
that we may find shelter and deliverance in the superior power of our
Redeemer. We carefully secure our houses with bolts and locks to protect our
property and our lives from evil men; but we seldom think of the evil angels
who are constantly seeking access to us, and against whose attacks we have,
in our own strength, no method of defense. If permitted, they can distract
our minds, disorder and torment our bodies, destroy our possessions and our
lives. Their only delight is in misery and destruction. Fearful is the
condition of those who resist the divine claims and yield to Satan's
temptations, until God gives them up to the control of evil spirits. But
those who follow Christ are ever safe under His watchcare. Angels that excel
in strength are sent from heaven to protect them. The wicked one cannot
break through the guard which God has stationed about His people.

The Quranic Muhammad
In Sura 18:110, and elsewhere, Muhammad is commanded by Allah:

"Say, I am but a man like yourselves."

Nowhere in the Quran is Muhammad said to be sinless. Instead, Allah tells
Muhammad that he is no different than any other man.

Those Muslims who claim that Muhammad was sinless have failed to note Sura
40:55, where Allah told Muhammad to repent of his sins!

Muhammad Pickthal translates Sura 40:55 as saying:

"Ask forgiveness of thy sin".

The only way out of this passage is to state that Allah was wrong to ask
Muhammad to ask for forgiveness because he had nothing to forgive!

Pickthal's translation of Sura 48:1, 2 states:

"Lo! We have given thee,
      (O Muhammad), signal victory,
that Allah may forgive thee
of past and that which is to
come, and may perfect His
favor unto thee, and guide
thee on a right path"

Not only was Muhammad commanded to repent of his sins and to seek
forgiveness, but he was also reminded off his past sins that Allah had
already forgiven and of future sins which would need future forgiveness!

Muhammad was not sinless according to the Quran. He was just one more poor
sinner in need of forgiveness and redemption.

Open Letter to Our Muslim Friends:

I know many, if not most of you share the shock and horror at the actions of
the few in the atrocity of September 11th. and I strongly suspect that many
of you are as deeply embarrassed-as Muslims-over the actions of these
Islamic extremists, as I am-as a Christian-over the atrocities done in
history "in the name of Christ" in the Spanish Inquisition, or other
insanities.

I know many of you to be peace-loving people, who struggle daily with the
uneasy tension between the demands of your human heart for peace and trust ,
and the demands of your faith for victory and "no compromise"-at whatever
cost to you and others. Where the "comfortable" Christian or "official"
Christian is often weak and superficial in his commitment to his Lord Jesus,
many of you are strong in your zeal for your Prophet and his Book.

We Christians are embarrassed over our acts of violence, as you are often
embarrassed over Islamic violence such as this week's.

There is a very fundamental difference between these two, though, and it
reveals the heart of the deep differences of our faith and our founders.

The modern Christian is embarrassed at the historical acts of violence,
atrocity, and conquest committed by the church or with the endorsement of
the church because he knows that they violate the deepest teaching and
example of Jesus. Our embarrassment is that we lived as 'mere men', that we
stooped to the level of those without heart, that we failed to obey the
Living Lord.

Our Jesus of the Bible said 'no' to such violence. When confronted with an
angry, minority faction of first-century religious zealots in power, His
response was one of meekness. When slandered with false accusations, "like a
lamb drawn to slaughter, he opened not His mouth". When confronted with
violent death, He submitted His fate to His Heavenly Father.

He conquered death-not by killing it-but by dying Himself. He overcame evil
with good. His holy war against hate He fought with Love. His jihad against
arrogance and abuse of power was fought by His living as a Suffering Servant
among us. He triumphed over the decay among us by bringing His beauty from
heaven. As they pierced His flesh on the Cross, He prayed for His
tormentors: "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do".

As His enemies swirled about Him at the Garden of Gethsemane on the night of
His betrayal and unjust trials, He could have asked His Father for military
assistance-72,000 angels-but He did not (Injil, Gospel according to Matthew,
26.47-54):

While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him
was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests
and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with
them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." Going at once to Jesus, Judas
said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him. Jesus replied, "Friend, do what
you came for." Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.
With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and
struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. "Put your sword
back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die
by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once
put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would
the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?"

Unlike many other religious founders and leaders of the past, He calls His
betrayer "friend", and commands His followers to put down their swords. in
submission to the will of God.

He did not shrink from His wounds-He embraced them. Even after He was raised
from the dead by God the Father, He still carried-on His resurrected and
indestructible new body-the marks of His deliberate weakness and the
evidence of His innocent pain-in the nail prints in His hands.

In His unprecedented life of Love, He called His followers to take up their
Cross (not someone else's), deny themselves (not others), and live as He did
(giving His life for the welfare of others).

For the Christian, acts of aggression and intrusive violence are the gravest
of sins-for they proceed from hearts that do not live with the "meekness and
gentleness" of Christ, hearts that are selfish, arrogance, exploitative, and
calloused toward others. Jesus gave His all-His very life-for others, but
violence proceeds from 'taking':

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your
desires that battle within you? You want something but don't get it. You
kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight."
(Injeel, Epistle of James, chapter 4)

Some of you by now have perceived the radical difference between this
example of Jesus, and the lives of some of His followers in history. We have
misrepresented Him to you, by our own failures to live His way and love His
way in history. But the true view of His heart can be seen in the stories in
the New Testament-in His words of gentleness, in His deeds of mercy, and in
His death for the sins of the world. His sacrifice-of-love death on the
Cross before His Father-dying as a curse in our place so that we would not
have to be accursed from God ourselves-was for all of us humans: me, you,
Peter and Paul, Mohammed, Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar, and those yet unborn.

And, some of you by now have perceived the radical difference between the
message of this Jesus and some aspects of your faith. While there is much
noble truth in your faith, it also contains a disturbing undercurrent in
opposition to this way of Love, this way of gentleness, this way of meekness
and trust. It is this undercurrent which-in the hands of cruel men-become
the tragedy of this week, and which-in the hearts of people like
yourself-become a conscience troubled and uneasy.

This One taught us-in contrast to our own angry hearts, and in discontinuity
with some of the Prophet's teachings:

But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate
you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. (Gospel
according to Luke 6.27-28)

For Jesus, there was only complete consistency between His words and His
actions-He taught love and never lashed out at His enemies or initiated a
violent response. We as humans-of all faiths-fail to live as He did.

I encourage you to face this uneasiness in your heart, and take a fresh look
at this Jesus-NOT at His followers in history-and see for yourselves why His
offer of freedom and life was NOT couched in words of conquest and violence,
but in words such as these:

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in
heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my
burden is light." (Gospel according to Matthew 11.28-30)

As your conscience has been quickened by the Holy Spirit, you have seen
something of the evil of sin, of its power, its guilt, its woe; and you look
upon it with abhorrence. You feel that sin has separated you from God, that
you are in bondage to the power of evil. The more you struggle to escape,
the more you realize your helplessness. Your motives are impure; your heart
is unclean. You see that your life has been filled with selfishness and sin.
You long to be forgiven, to be cleansed, to be set free. Harmony with God,
likeness to Him--what can you do to obtain it?

It is peace that you need--Heaven's forgiveness and peace and love in the
soul. Money cannot buy it, intellect cannot procure it, wisdom cannot attain
to it; you can never hope, by your own efforts, to secure it. But God offers
it to you as a gift, "without money and without price." Isaiah 55:1. It is
yours if you will but reach out your hand and grasp it. The Lord says,
"Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they
be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." Isaiah 1:18. "A new heart also
will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you." Ezekiel 36:26.

You have confessed your sins, and in heart put them away. You have resolved
to give yourself to God. Now go to Him, and ask that He will wash away your
sins and give you a new heart. Then

50

believe that He does this because He has promised. This is the lesson which
Jesus taught while He was on earth, that the gift which God promises us, we
must believe we do receive, and it is ours. Jesus healed the people of their
diseases when they had faith in His power; He helped them in the things
which they could see, thus inspiring them with confidence in Him concerning
things which they could not see--leading them to believe in His power to
forgive sins. This He plainly stated in the healing of the man sick with
palsy: "That ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive
sins, (then saith He to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and
go unto thine house." Matthew 9:6. So also John the evangelist says,
speaking of the miracles of Christ, "These are written, that ye might
believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye
might have life through His name." John 20:31.

From the simple Bible account of how Jesus healed the sick, we may learn
something about how to believe in Him for the forgiveness of sins. Let us
turn to the story of the paralytic at Bethesda. The poor sufferer was
helpless; he had not used his limbs for thirty-eight years. Yet Jesus bade
him, "Rise, take up thy bed, and walk." The sick man might have said, "Lord,
if Thou wilt make me whole, I will obey Thy word." But, no, he believed
Christ's word, believed that he was made whole, and he made the effort at
once; he willed to walk, and he did walk. He acted on the word of Christ,
and God gave the power. He was made whole.

51

In like manner you are a sinner. You cannot atone for your past sins; you
cannot change your heart and make yourself holy. But God promises to do all
this for you through Christ. You believe that promise. You confess your sins
and give yourself to God. You will to serve Him. Just as surely as you do
this, God will fulfill His word to you. If you believe the promise,--believe
that you are forgiven and cleansed,--God supplies the fact; you are made
whole, just as Christ gave the paralytic power to walk when the man believed
that he was healed. It is so if you believe it.

Do not wait to feel that you are made whole, but say, "I believe it; it is
so, not because I feel it, but because God has promised."

Jesus says, "What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye
receive them, and ye shall have them." Mark 11:24. There is a condition to
this promise--that we pray according to the will of God. But it is the will
of God to cleanse us from sin, to make us His children, and to enable us to
live a holy life. So we may ask for these blessings, and believe that we
receive them, and thank God that we have received them. It is our privilege
to go to Jesus and be cleansed, and to stand before the law without shame or
remorse. "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ
Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." Romans 8:1.

Henceforth you are not your own; you are bought with a price. "Ye were not
redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold;... but with the
precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and

52

without spot." 1 Peter 1:18, 19. Through this simple act of believing God,
the Holy Spirit has begotten a new life in your heart. You are as a child
born into the family of God, and He loves you as He loves His Son.

Now that you have given yourself to Jesus, do not draw back, do not take
yourself away from Him, but day by day say, "I am Christ's; I have given
myself to Him;" and ask Him to give you His Spirit and keep you by His
grace. As it is by giving yourself to God, and believing Him, that you
become His child, so you are to live in Him. The apostle says, "As ye have
therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him." Colossians
2:6.

Some seem to feel that they must be on probation, and must prove to the Lord
that they are reformed, before they can claim His blessing. But they may
claim the blessing of God even now. They must have His grace, the Spirit of
Christ, to help their infirmities, or they cannot resist evil. Jesus loves
to have us come to Him just as we are, sinful, helpless, dependent. We may
come with all our weakness, our folly, our sinfulness, and fall at His feet
in penitence. It is His glory to encircle us in the arms of His love and to
bind up our wounds, to cleanse us from all impurity.

Here is where thousands fail; they do not believe that Jesus pardons them
personally, individually. They do not take God at His word. It is the
privilege of all who comply with the conditions to know for themselves that
pardon is freely extended for every sin. Put away the suspicion that God's
promises are not meant for you. They are for every

53

repentant transgressor. Strength and grace have been provided through Christ
to be brought by ministering angels to every believing soul. None are so
sinful that they cannot find strength, purity, and righteousness in Jesus,
who died for them. He is waiting to strip them of their garments stained and
polluted with sin, and to put upon them the white robes of righteousness; He
bids them live and not die.

God does not deal with us as finite men deal with one another. His thoughts
are thoughts of mercy, love, and tenderest compassion. He says, "Let the
wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him
return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for
He will abundantly pardon." "I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy
transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins." Isaiah 55:7; 44:22.

"I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God:
wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye." Ezekiel 18:32. Satan is ready to
steal away the blessed assurances of God. He desires to take every glimmer
of hope and every ray of light from the soul; but you must not permit him to
do this. Do not give ear to the tempter, but say, "Jesus has died that I
might live. He loves me, and wills not that I should perish. I have a
compassionate heavenly Father; and although I have abused His love, though
the blessings He has given me have been squandered, I will arise, and go to
my Father, and say, 'I have sinned against heaven, and before Thee, and am
no more worthy to be called Thy son: make me as one of Thy hired servants.'"
The parable tells you how

54

the wanderer will be received: "When he was yet a great way off, his father
saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him."
Luke 15:18-20.

But even this parable, tender and touching as it is, comes short of
expressing the infinite compassion of the heavenly Father. The Lord declares
by His prophet, "I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with
loving-kindness have I drawn thee." Jeremiah 31:3. While the sinner is yet
far from the Father's house, wasting his substance in a strange country, the
Father's heart is yearning over him; and every longing awakened in the soul
to return to God is but the tender pleading of His Spirit, wooing,
entreating, drawing the wanderer to his Father's heart of love.

With the rich promises of the Bible before you, can you give place to doubt?
Can you believe that when the poor sinner longs to return, longs to forsake
his sins, the Lord sternly withholds him from coming to His feet in
repentance? Away with such thoughts! Nothing can hurt your own soul more
than to entertain such a conception of our heavenly Father. He hates sin,
but He loves the sinner, and He gave Himself in the person of Christ, that
all who would might be saved and have eternal blessedness in the kingdom of
glory. What stronger or more tender language could have been employed than
He has chosen in which to express His love toward us? He declares, "Can a
woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the
son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee." Isaiah
49:15.

Look up, you that are doubting and trembling;

55

for Jesus lives to make intercession for us. Thank God for the gift of His
dear Son and pray that He may not have died for you in vain. The Spirit
invites you today. Come with your whole heart to Jesus, and you may claim
His blessing.

As you read the promises, remember they are the expression of unutterable
love and pity. The great heart of Infinite Love is drawn toward the sinner
with boundless compassion. "We have redemption through His blood, the
forgiveness of sins." Ephesians 1:7. Yes, only believe that God is your
helper. He wants to restore His moral image in man. As you draw near to Him
with confession and repentance, He will draw near to you with mercy and
forgiveness.

God's promise is, "Ye shall seek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for
Me with all your heart." Jeremiah 29:13.

The whole heart must be yielded to God, or the change can never be wrought
in us by which we are to be restored to His likeness. By nature we are
alienated from God. The Holy Spirit describes our condition in such words as
these: "Dead in trespasses and sins;" "the whole head is sick, and the whole
heart faint;" "no soundness in it." We are held fast in the snare of Satan,
"taken captive by him at his will." Ephesians 2:1; Isaiah 1:5, 6; 2 Timothy
2:26. God desires to heal us, to set us free. But since this requires an
entire transformation, a renewing of our whole nature, we must yield
ourselves wholly to Him.

The warfare against self is the greatest battle that was ever fought. The
yielding of self, surrendering all to the will of God, requires a struggle;
but the soul must submit to God before it can be renewed in holiness.

The government of God is not, as Satan would make it appear, founded upon a
blind submission, an unreasoning control. It appeals to the intellect and
the conscience. "Come now, and let us reason together" is the Creator's
invitation to the beings He has made. Isaiah 1:18. God does not force the
will of His creatures. He cannot accept an homage that is not willingly and
intelligently given. A mere forced submission would prevent all real
development of mind

44

or character; it would make man a mere automaton. Such is not the purpose of
the Creator. He desires that man, the crowning work of His creative power,
shall reach the highest possible development. He sets before us the height
of blessing to which He desires to bring us through His grace. He invites us
to give ourselves to Him, that He may work His will in us. It remains for us
to choose whether we will be set free from the bondage of sin, to share the
glorious liberty of the sons of God.

In giving ourselves to God, we must necessarily give up all that would
separate us from Him. Hence the Saviour says, "Whosoever he be of you that
forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be My disciple." Luke 14:33.
Whatever shall draw away the heart from God must be given up. Mammon is the
idol of many. The love of money, the desire for wealth, is the golden chain
that binds them to Satan. Reputation and worldly honor are worshiped by
another class. The life of selfish ease and freedom from responsibility is
the idol of others. But these slavish bands must be broken. We cannot be
half the Lord's and half the world's. We are not God's children unless we
are such entirely.

There are those who profess to serve God, while they rely upon their own
efforts to obey His law, to form a right character, and secure salvation.
Their hearts are not moved by any deep sense of the love of Christ, but they
seek to perform the duties of the Christian life as that which God requires
of them in order to gain heaven. Such religion is worth nothing. When Christ
dwells in the heart, the soul will

45

be so filled with His love, with the joy of communion with Him, that it will
cleave to Him; and in the contemplation of Him, self will be forgotten. Love
to Christ will be the spring of action. Those who feel the constraining love
of God, do not ask how little may be given to meet the requirements of God;
they do not ask for the lowest standard, but aim at perfect conformity to
the will of their Redeemer. With earnest desire they yield all and manifest
an interest proportionate to the value of the object which they seek. A
profession of Christ without this deep love is mere talk, dry formality, and
heavy drudgery.

Do you feel that it is too great a sacrifice to yield all to Christ? Ask
yourself the question, "What has Christ given for me?" The Son of God gave
all--life and love and suffering--for our redemption. And can it be that we,
the unworthy objects of so great love, will withhold our hearts from Him?
Every moment of our lives we have been partakers of the blessings of His
grace, and for this very reason we cannot fully realize the depths of
ignorance and misery from which we have been saved. Can we look upon Him
whom our sins have pierced, and yet be willing to do despite to all His love
and sacrifice? In view of the infinite humiliation of the Lord of glory,
shall we murmur because we can enter into life only through conflict and
self-abasement?

The inquiry of many a proud heart is, "Why need I go in penitence and
humiliation before I can have the assurance of my acceptance with God?" I
point you to Christ. He was sinless, and, more than this, He was the Prince
of heaven; but in man's

46

behalf He became sin for the race. "He was numbered with the transgressors;
and He bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."
Isaiah 53:12.

But what do we give up, when we give all? A sin-polluted heart, for Jesus to
purify, to cleanse by His own blood, and to save by His matchless love. And
yet men think it hard to give up all! I am ashamed to hear it spoken of,
ashamed to write it.

God does not require us to give up anything that it is for our best interest
to retain. In all that He does, He has the well-being of His children in
view. Would that all who have not chosen Christ might realize that He has
something vastly better to offer them than they are seeking for themselves.
Man is doing the greatest injury and injustice to his own soul when he
thinks and acts contrary to the will of God. No real joy can be found in the
path forbidden by Him who knows what is best and who plans for the good of
His creatures. The path of transgression is the path of misery and
destruction.

It is a mistake to entertain the thought that God is pleased to see His
children suffer. All heaven is interested in the happiness of man. Our
heavenly Father does not close the avenues of joy to any of His creatures.
The divine requirements call upon us to shun those indulgences that would
bring suffering and disappointment, that would close to us the door of
happiness and heaven. The world's Redeemer accepts men as they are, with all
their wants, imperfections, and weaknesses; and He will not only cleanse
from sin and grant redemption through His blood, but

47

will satisfy the heart-longing of all who consent to wear His yoke, to bear
His burden. It is His purpose to impart peace and rest to all who come to
Him for the bread of life. He requires us to perform only those duties that
will lead our steps to heights of bliss to which the disobedient can never
attain. The true, joyous life of the soul is to have Christ formed within,
the hope of glory.

Many are inquiring, "How am I to make the surrender of myself to God?" You
desire to give yourself to Him, but you are weak in moral power, in slavery
to doubt, and controlled by the habits of your life of sin. Your promises
and resolutions are like ropes of sand. You cannot control your thoughts,
your impulses, your affections. The knowledge of your broken promises and
forfeited pledges weakens your confidence in your own sincerity, and causes
you to feel that God cannot accept you; but you need not despair. What you
need to understand is the true force of the will. This is the governing
power in the nature of man, the power of decision, or of choice. Everything
depends on the right action of the will. The power of choice God has given
to men; it is theirs to exercise. You cannot change your heart, you cannot
of yourself give to God its affections; but you can choose to serve Him. You
can give Him your will; He will then work in you to will and to do according
to His good pleasure. Thus your whole nature will be brought under the
control of the Spirit of Christ; your affections will be centered upon Him,
your thoughts will be in harmony with Him.

Desires for goodness and holiness are right as

48

far as they go; but if you stop here, they will avail nothing. Many will be
lost while hoping and desiring to be Christians. They do not come to the
point of yielding the will to God. They do not now choose to be Christians.

Through the right exercise of the will, an entire change may be made in your
life. By yielding up your will to Christ, you ally yourself with the power
that is above all principalities and powers. You will have strength from
above to hold you steadfast, and thus through constant surrender to God you
will be enabled to live the new life, even the life of faith.

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and
forsaketh them shall have mercy." Proverbs 28:13.
The conditions of obtaining mercy of God are simple and just and reasonable.
The Lord does not require us to do some grievous thing in order that we may
have the forgiveness of sin. We need not make long and wearisome
pilgrimages, or perform painful penances, to commend our souls to the God of
heaven or to expiate our transgression; but he that confesseth and forsaketh
his sin shall have mercy.

The apostle says, "Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for
another, that ye may be healed." James 5:16. Confess your sins to God, who
only can forgive them, and your faults to one another. If you have given
offense to your friend or neighbor, you are to acknowledge your wrong, and
it is his duty freely to forgive you. Then you are to seek the forgiveness
of God, because the brother you have wounded is the property of God, and in
injuring him you sinned against his Creator and Redeemer. The case is
brought before the only true Mediator, our great High Priest, who "was in
all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin," and who is "touched
with the feeling of our infirmities," and is able to cleanse from every
stain of iniquity. Hebrews 4:15.

Those who have not humbled their souls before God in acknowledging their
guilt, have not yet

38

fulfilled the first condition of acceptance. If we have not experienced that
repentance which is not to be repented of, and have not with true
humiliation of soul and brokenness of spirit confessed our sins, abhorring
our iniquity, we have never truly sought for the forgiveness of sin; and if
we have never sought, we have never found the peace of God. The only reason
why we do not have remission of sins that are past is that we are not
willing to humble our hearts and comply with the conditions of the word of
truth. Explicit instruction is given concerning this matter. Confession of
sin, whether public or private, should be heartfelt and freely expressed. It
is not to be urged from the sinner. It is not to be made in a flippant and
careless way, or forced from those who have no realizing sense of the
abhorrent character of sin. The confession that is the outpouring of the
inmost soul finds its way to the God of infinite pity. The psalmist says,
"The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as
be of a contrite spirit." Psalm 34:18.

True confession is always of a specific character, and acknowledges
particular sins. They may be of such a nature as to be brought before God
only; they may be wrongs that should be confessed to individuals who have
suffered injury through them; or they may be of a public character, and
should then be as publicly confessed. But all confession should be definite
and to the point, acknowledging the very sins of which you are guilty.

In the days of Samuel the Israelites wandered from God. They were suffering
the consequences of

39

sin; for they had lost their faith in God, lost their discernment of His
power and wisdom to rule the nation, lost their confidence in His ability to
defend and vindicate His cause. They turned from the great Ruler of the
universe and desired to be governed as were the nations around them. Before
they found peace they made this definite confession: "We have added unto all
our sins this evil, to ask us a king." 1 Samuel 12:19. The very sin of which
they were convicted had to be confessed. Their ingratitude oppressed their
souls and severed them from God.

Confession will not be acceptable to God without sincere repentance and
reformation. There must be decided changes in the life; everything offensive
to God must be put away. This will be the result of genuine sorrow for sin.
The work that we have to do on our part is plainly set before us: "Wash you,
make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before Mine eyes;
cease to do evil; learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed,
judge the fatherless, plead for the widow." Isaiah 1:16, 17. "If the wicked
restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of
life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die."
Ezekiel 33:15. Paul says, speaking of the work of repentance: "Ye sorrowed
after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing
of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement
desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved
yourselves to be clear in this matter." 2 Corinthians 7:11.

40

When sin has deadened the moral perceptions, the wrongdoer does not discern
the defects of his character nor realize the enormity of the evil he has
committed; and unless he yields to the convicting power of the Holy Spirit
he remains in partial blindness to his sin. His confessions are not sincere
and in earnest. To every acknowledgment of his guilt he adds an apology in
excuse of his course, declaring that if it had not been for certain
circumstances he would not have done this or that for which he is reproved.

After Adam and Eve had eaten of the forbidden fruit, they were filled with a
sense of shame and terror. At first their only thought was how to excuse
their sin and escape the dreaded sentence of death. When the Lord inquired
concerning their sin, Adam replied, laying the guilt partly upon God and
partly upon his companion: "The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she
gave me of the tree, and I did eat." The woman put the blame upon the
serpent, saying, "The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat." Genesis 3: 12,
13. Why did You make the serpent? Why did You suffer him to come into Eden?
These were the questions implied in her excuse for her sin, thus charging
God with the responsibility of their fall. The spirit of self-justification
originated in the father of lies and has been exhibited by all the sons and
daughters of Adam. Confessions of this order are not inspired by the divine
Spirit and will not be acceptable to God. True repentance will lead a man to
bear his guilt himself and acknowledge it without deception or hypocrisy.
Like the poor publican, not lifting up so much as his eyes unto heaven, he
will cry, "God be

41

merciful to me a sinner," and those who do acknowledge their guilt will be
justified, for Jesus will plead His blood in behalf of the repentant soul.
