People are so used to living with one idea of deity that they tend to
forget that there are many cultures with many gods - most gods that
have been worshipped throughout history and pre-history are now
forgotten or known only by a mural or a carving. The history of belief
in the divine is long and complex and cannot be reduced to a binary
choice.
You can name your dog "Dog" or "prince" or "Fido".
Likewise you can name your deity "God" or "Zeus" . God is a proper
noun and god is a category/ species.
Cheers, Mark.
