Protest march in Yerevan for Hrant Dink; Parisians to march on Saturday

The Armenian capital Yerevan yesterday was the site of a large protest march
in honor of journalist Hrant Dink, who was slain in Istanbul last Friday.

According to reports, the march included more than 100 thousand citizens,
who arrived in Yerevan from all parts of the country; marchers carried large
photographs of Hrant Dink, as well as posters calling for a change to
Turkey's controversial article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code.

Meanwhile, preparations are going in on France in advance of a large protest
march planned for January 27 in Paris in memory of Hrant Dink. The march,
which organizers are saying will be silent, will bring together a number of
civil society groups under banners saying "We are all Hrant, we are all
Armenian," just as was seen in Istanbul on Tuesday, the day of Dink's
funeral.

Rise of the right in Europe

With the help of a former court poet to the Communist hardman of old
Romania, Nicolae Ceausescu, Europe's political landscape is being
reshaped - and not in a welcome direction.

Five MEPs from the racist Greater Romania party and one from the
extreme-right Bulgarian Attack party have linked up with Europe's
existing ultra-nationalists to form a 20-strong bloc in the European
parliament which is now eligible for up to 1m euros in central funding.

The new alliance, known as Identity, Tradition and Sovereignty (ITS),
unites the traditions of pre-Second World War xenophobia and
anti-Semitism with modern post-Fascists such as Italy's Alessandra
Mussolini and France's Jean-Marie Le Pen. Britain is represented by
Ashley Mote, formerly of UKIP and now an independent.

Turkey looms over French presidential campaign

"I want a Europe in which Turkey has no place," said Nicolas Sarkozy,
freshly nominated candidate of France's ruling party, the Union for a
Popular Movement (UMP).

Summing up his vision of Europe on a French TV station was not such a
surprising move for France's popular interior minister, who is opposed to
Turkey's EU membership, arguing that Turkey is not...

Former US envoy predicts 'genocide' resolution will pass

Tuesday, January 16, 2007

ANKARA - Turkish Daily News

Mark Parris, former U.S. ambassador to Turkey, said a resolution
classifying the killings of Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire as
"genocide" is likely to pass in the U.S. Congress.

"It will be brought to the agenda 100 percent. The resolution is likely to
pass in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Turkey
traditionally relied on the support of political actors in Washington but
this support might weaken for some reasons. . Democrats are sensitive about
the Armenian question," Parris, director of the 2007 Turkey program at the
Brookings Institution, said in an interview published yesterday in daily
Milliyet.

In a nationwide congressional election in November, Armenians' Democratic
allies won a landslide victory, taking over control of both the House of
Representatives and the Senate. Both new Democratic congressional
leaderships favor the Armenian position.

Belgian government site hacked by nationalists

Tuesday, January 16, 2007

BRUSSELS - The Associated Press

The Web site of Belgium's Defense Ministry was hacked Sunday by a group of
Turkish nationalists, news reports said.

The group, which called themselves "grandchildren of the Ottoman Empire
and Children of Turkey" posted text in English on the site dismissing the
Armenian genocide claims and asserting that there was no Kurdish problem in
Turkey. It also claimed that the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) was a
terrorist organization supported by the West, according to footage shown on
RTBF, Belgium's French-language public TV broadcaster.

There was no suggestion why the group had chosen a Belgian government
site.

Late on Monday the site, www.mil.be, was still inaccessible.

"In terms of image, this is not very good," said Defense Minister Andre
Flahaut. The ministry was beefing up its web firewall and testing its
resistance to hackers on Monday before opening up the site again to the
public. The ministry has lodged a complaint with the prosecutor's office.

Sarkozy launches presidential bid with anti-Turkey stance

15.01.2007 - 09:18 CET | By Lucia Kubosova

Nicolas Sarkozy, the current French interior minister, has been officially
confirmed as the centre-right ruling party's candidate for April's
presidential election, launching his campaign with the suggestion that
"Turkey has no place inside the European Union".

Mr Sarkozy, 51, known as 'Sarko' in the French press, received 98 percent of
the votes from members of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) gathered
for an internal ballot on Sunday (14 January).

In his acceptance speech to some 80,000 party supporters, the outspoken
politician made what is referred to by analysts as the strongest statement
so far on Turkey's European ambitions.

"I want to say that Europe must give itself borders, that not all countries
have a vocation to become members of Europe, beginning with Turkey which has
no place inside the European Union," he said, according to press reports.

"Enlarging Europe with no limit risks destroying European political union,
and that I do not accept," he said.

Bianet - "Minorities Reclame Confiscated Properties":

ECHR sentences Turkey to damages amounting to 890 000 euros for unlawfully
confiscating properties of a trust founded by non-muslim minority. Lawyer
Hatemi says the government should stop discriminating among citizens or
similar cases are pending.

ANKARA / 15 January 2006 / by Tolga Korkut

Expert on minority rights, lawyer Kezban Hatemi states that European Court
of Human Rights' ruling regarding the restitution of properties of trusts
founded by minorities in Turkey constitutes a prejudication for similar
cases.

ECHR ruled that the Turkish state should pay 890 thousand euros in damages
to the Fener Roman High School for Boys Foundation for a breach of right to
property.

The foundation's two properties -acquired as donations- were confiscated
following the Turkish Treasury's attempts to court in 1996.
