Acid violence continues to be silent scourge
Acid control act remains ineffective
By Alpha Arzu
The victims of acid throwing are on the rise as the scourge goes on
unabated across the country because of easy availability of the
hazardous chemical although a stringent law has been in force since
2002.
The name of Sabina Yasmin, a newly married teenaged housewife of
Kishoreganj, was the latest addition to the growing list of acid
victims. With half of the body burnt, she died at Dhaka Medical
College Hospital recently, ending her 20-day struggle for life.

Father Admits To 24-Year Abuse of Daughter
73-Year-Old Austrian Admits Locking Daughter in Cellar, Fathering Her
Seven Kids
By CHRISTEL KUCHARZ
April 28, 2008 —
People in the small Austrian town of Amstetten are reeling in shock as
details emerge of a woman's two-decade imprisonment and rape at the
hands of her father, a crime the Austrian interior minister called
"unfathomable."
"A 73-year-old man confessed he built a dungeon in the basement of the
family's home in downtown Amstetten. He says he kept his own daughter
locked up for almost 24 years in order to prevent her having access to
the local drug scene," Austrian prosecutor Gerhard Sedlacek told ABC
News.
At a press conference today with local law enforcement officials and
medical staff present, Sedlacek called the case "a unique crime of
such proportion I haven't seen in 32 years of my career, a terrible
crime, which is beyond imagination."

Dear Khonu mtung and all,
Khonu mtung is expected to promote democracy against the Burmese military
fascism. But even if it tries to be neutral between democracy and fascism,
it should not use the term like "to exercise their franchise TO APPROVE the
draft constitution" in what it stated as "Some individuals in Chin state,
Burma have already begun to exercise their franchise to approve the draft
constitution in the referendum ahead of May 10".

The Positive Party–the Beyond Ideology Think Tank
By Andrew Wainwright
(taken from) http://www.trans4mind.com/counterpoint/wainwright.shtml
I'm trying to start a "pro-humanity" lobby group, to promote
government policies which help free citizens to achieve their aims
rather than repressing and restricting them. My reason for doing this
is the increasing negativity and reactionary tone of the political
scene in both my home country (the UK) and elsewhere in the world,
what I would term "the politics of fear." This plays to the "chimp"
element within us, i.e. scaremongering, racism, xenophobia, religious
bigotry etc. I feel there is a need to promote the holistic - the
pursuit of real happiness - in society as opposed to the
materialistic, which is always going to leave man fighting against
man.
One of the most depressing facets of politics today is the amount of
cynicism, defeatism and negativity shown by both politicians and the
media. I believe this feeling is shared by many people of different
political persuasions. In a bizarre twist on Labour's 1997 anthem, we
are now singing "Things Can Only Get Worse."

Referendum Failed in Zomi (Chin) State: Mock Poll Suggests
Chinland Guardian
April 27, 2008
An early simulated poll conducted by authorities in Zomi (Chin) State's
capital of Haka came up with a resounding "no" to the constitutional
referendum slated for May 10. The poll, conducted as part of a
state-sponsored campaign to educate and persuade voters in Zomi (Chin) State
to vote for the new constitution, reveals that the majority of people voted
"No" to the new constitution. The shocking result came as the State Peace
and Development Council intensified campaign efforts in Zomi (Chin) State.

If history works out in the end, the high price paid in blood and
suffering can at least be justified as having produced some good. But
what happens when it doesn't?
Clearly, radical Islamism and the region's current political troubles
have parallels with the European history of Christianity and Judaism.
Yet often the nearest equivalents date not from a few decades back but
rather from the 1500s and 1600s. That calendar gap shows why the
region's task is so monumental and lengthy.
In the 1500s and 1600s, Europe and its two main religions struggled
with the impact of modernization, rationalism and scientific thinking;
the challenge of new ideas; and revitalized interest in ancient pagan
Greece and Rome. Despite much bloodshed and repression, a way was
found to manage these contradictions.
Islam and the Arabic-speaking world, not to mention Iran, have still
not done so on a large scale. Before there can be democracy, rapid
development, social progress, equal rights for women and other such
changes, this job has to be done. And the work has barely begun.
