  Re: Apartheid Cuba

Author: Barry Schier

The government of Mugabe (Zimbabwe's long-time head of state)
expropriated a limited number of farms from rich white farmers and
distributed the lands to those in his personal or political milieux.
The government of the Cuban Revolution (led by Fidel Castro)
distributed land (taken mostly from ABSENTEE landlords /
latifundistas) and distributed the land to all who promised to till it
(i.e., mostly landless peasants) -- and in reaction Cuba's
agricultural reform (i.e., long before the Cuban government declared
Cuba to be a socialist country), the United States government began
its relentless attacks on Cuba's popular government (which have
continued for almost a half century) .

The government of Mugabe is anti-gay and anti-women in both politics,
laws, and rhetoric. The government of revultionary Cuba represents the
interests of women. Vilma Espin (i.e., the just recently deceased wife
of acting President Raul Castro and a revolutionist / leader / figure
in her own right) founded (and was long-time Presidetn of) the FMC
(Cuban Federation of Women), whose membership is a few millions (on an
island whose female popluation is only about half of 11.3 million).

Cuba sent 300,000 troops to aid the Angolans ...

Geography of Puerto Rico
A Brief Overview of the U.S. Island Territory

Puerto Rico is the easternmost island of the Greater Antilles in the
Caribbean Sea, approximately a thousand miles southeast of Florida and
just east of the Dominican Republic and west of the U.S. Virgin
Islands. The island is approximately 90 miles wide in an east-west
direction and 30 miles wide between the north and south coasts.
Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States but if it became a
state, Puerto Rico's land area of 3,435 square miles (8,897 km2) would
make it the 49th largest state (larger than Delaware and Rhode
Island).

The coasts of tropical Puerto Rico are flat but most of the interior
is mountainous. The tallest mountain is in the center of the island,
Cerro de Punta, which is 4,389 feet high (1338 meters). About eight
percent of the land is arable for agriculture. Droughts and hurricanes
are the major natural hazards.

Puerto Rico is Not a Country

Does Not Meet Independent Criteria: Puerto Rico is a U.S. Territory
There are eight accepted criteria used to determine whether an entity
is an independent country (also known as a State with a capital "s")
or not.

Puerto Rico, a small island (approximately 100 miles long and 35 miles
wide) territory located in the Caribbean Sea east of the island
Hispaniola, has been the home of aboriginal peoples for centuries. In
1493, the island was claimed by Spain in 1493 following Columbus'
second voyage to the Americas. After 400 years of colonial rule that
saw the indigenous population nearly exterminated and African slave
labor introduced, Puerto Rico was ceded to the United States as a
result of the Spanish-American War in 1898.

Let us now examine the eight criteria of independence in regard to
Puerto Rico.

1. Has space or territory that has internationally recognized
boundaries (boundary disputes are OK).

Yes, Puerto Rico's boundaries are undisputed because it is an island.

2. Has people who live there on an ongoing basis.
