More than 1,500 people die of torture in Indian prison

New Delhi (AsiaNews) – “Torture is legalised state terrorism,” said
Lenin Raghuvanshi, director of the People’s Vigilance Committee on
Human Rights (PVCHR) as he commented a report by the Asian Centre for
Human Rights titled Torture in India 2008: A State of Denial which
found that 7,468 persons, at an average of 1,494 persons per year,
died in prison and police custody between 2002 to 2007. An equal
number of persons, if not more, were killed by the army and state
paramilitary forces custody in insurgency affected areas, a large
number of these deaths the result of torture.

In the country’s 12,000 police stations all over the country there is
frequent use of torture and use of deadly force at local police
stations in India.

India has the highest number of cases of police torture and custodial
deaths among the world’s democracies and the weakest law against
torture. The police often operate in a climate of impunity, where
torture is seen as routine police behaviour to extract confessions.

The distorted image of Muslim women

The distorted image of Muslim women

Since the height of the feminist movement in the late 70's there has been a
magnifying glass placed over the status of Muslim women. Unfortunately, the
magnifying glass that has been used is an unusual one.

Unusual in the sense that it is very selective about which items it will
magnify; other items it will distort to such a degree that they will no
longer look familiar. I remember once reading an "in depth" article about
the lives of Muslim women. This article "explained" that at any time a man
can divorce his wife by simply stating "I divorce you, I divorce you, I
divorce you".

This article can lead anyone ignorant of the Islamic ruling regarding
divorce to believe that in less than five seconds the woman is left with no
husband and is left to care for herself (and possibly children) by any means
necessary.

The question that immediately popped up in my mind was, "Did the author
innocently write that out of sincere ignorance or was it another of the many
attempts to degrade the religion of Islam and its followers (Muslims)?" It
may be out of paranoia, but I tend to believe it was the latter of the two.

Contribution of Islam to the world's civilization

Contribution of Islam to the world's civilization

Let us remember our great and glorious heritage by briefly surveying what
Islam has already contributed to the world's civilization, education,
culture and to scientific development.

Unlike Christianity where Religion and Science are two separate elements,
the study of Science has always been compatible with Islam.

Many young Muslims are discouraged when they see the poor standard of living
of Muslims throughout the world and their limited opportunities. They also
know the undeveloped status of technology within the Muslim countries in
comparison with the West. From these observations, they immediately leap to
the conclusion that the Muslim countries are 'backward', because Islam
cannot adapt itself to the changing conditions; cannot assimilate new
knowledge. Some even go so far as to say that Islam is actually against
progress and against scientific advancement. However, those Muslims who have
studied the later part of Islamic history will know that this is a complete
fallacy and misconception.

Let us do a brief review of the contribution of Islam to civilization as we
know it.

US planned nerve gas tests on Aussies
Article from: AAP

July 06, 2008 04:03am

IT'S been revealed that the US military planned to test deadly nerve
gas on Australian soldiers in far north Queensland during the Cold
War.

Newly declassified Defence and Prime Minister's office files show that
the US was strongly pushing then prime minister Harold Holt's
government in the 1960s to allow tests of two of the deadliest
chemical weapons ever developed -- VX and GB, better known as Sarin
nerve gas.

The revelation will air this morning on the Nine Network's Sunday
program.

It says the top secret plan involved allowing 200 mainly Australian
combat troops to be aerially bombed and sprayed with the chemical
weapons.

It's understood the Iron Range rainforest near Lockhart River in far
north Queensland was the likely location for the tests.
