July 21,
2008 Monday Rajab 17, 1429
SRINAGAR, July 20: Two Indian soldiers and four suspected Muslim
militants were killed in separate gunbattles while two other people
died in a grenade attack in occupied Kashmir, the army said on Sunday.
The violence flared up across the Himalayan region ahead of a new
round of Pakistan-India peace talks on Monday that are opposed by some
Kashmiri groups.
An Indian army officer and a soldier died in a firefight with
militants in Rajouri area, a day after nine Indian troops were killed
in a landmine blast near Srinagar.
“The encounter broke out on Saturday and still continues,” Indian army
spokesman Lt-Col S. D. Goswami said.
Separately, an Indian tourist and a local picnicker were killed and at
least five others wounded on Sunday when suspected militants threw a
grenade at a hill resort in Gulmarg, west of Srinagar, police said.
The valley of Gulmarg, ringed by pine forests and famous for its ski
slopes and cable car, lies close to the Line of Control dividing
Indian and Pakistani Kashmir.

M. Aftab
I must admit ours is a story of a bully and dummies. If that is not
so, then how will you define the government's tutelage of George Bush
and other American hawks towards Pakistani doves? How will you
describe it when the latest US `gift' to Pakistanis — the amassing of
Nato troops, are knocking on our Western doors? This is despite Prime
Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani hoping against hope and saying that
"Pakistan is a sovereign state and no one has the right to attack it".
Does the US care Mr Prime Minister?
The stream of threats from Washington's military, the State
Department, Pentagon and Bush himself are no longer mere rhetoric.
American military aircraft and drones are actually operating in the
Pakistani skies, committing aggression and fighting a war against
Pakistan. This latest aggression is not against al Qaeda or the
Taliban, the label of which they use to justify their open aggression
against Pakistan and its betrayed people. The people are betrayed by
George Bush. That everyone knows from the past US behaviour towards
Pakistan.

A world without joy
By Irfan Husain
IMAGINE a world without joy: a world in which music, dancing and art
are prohibited; where women have been declared non-persons and
banished from public view; and where games and sports of all kinds
have been banned.
In this dreary, monochromatic world, poetry, prose and drama have no
place, and dissent is punishable by death. This is a world with
endless lists about what citizens are not allowed to do, and most
human activity is focused on imposing yet more restrictions. In short,
a world devoid of everything that makes life worth living.

Coalition 'bombs Afghan police'
Generic pic of international soldier in Afghanistan
International forces have been involved in a series of controversies
At least 13 Afghan police and civilians have died in two incidents
involving international forces, officials say.
Four Afghan police and five civilians died in an apparently mistaken
air strike by international coalition forces in Farah province.
Separately, the Nato-led Isaf said it had "accidentally" killed at
least four civilians in Paktika province.
The incidents are the latest in a series of controversial clashes
involving foreign troops.
They come as US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is in
Afghanistan as part of an overseas tour.
Mr Obama, who wants to increase US troop levels in Afghanistan, was
due to meet Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday.
Mr Karzai has said no civilian casualty is acceptable.

Angry farmers in the Indian state of West Bengal have been dumping
their potato crop on roads in protest against poor prices.
Farmers say they are selling at a loss because a bumper crop and lack
of storage facilities has led to a dramatic fall in prices.
The West Bengal government is asking neighbouring Indian states to
purchase potatoes from them.
The move comes as prices for other foods in Asia have soared.
'Pocketed by middlemen'
At a time when food prices are rising across Asia, nobody expects
farmers to complain.
But that's precisely what tens of thousands of farmers who grow potato
in the Indian state of West Bengal are doing now.
They say a bumper potato crop has led to a huge surplus of more than
15,000 metric tones and there's not enough cold storage facilities in
the state to preserve it for off-season sale when prices are better.
Indian supermarket
Other food prices have risen sharply this year
The price of potatoes has fallen across West Bengal this month by
almost half - to around four to five rupees (12 US cents) a kilogram.
