Asia: swapping one addiction for another?

THE Asian economy has shown a remarkable immunity to slowing US growth, so it
would be richly ironic if the region were to trip up now over a byproduct of its
resilience sky-high oil and commodity prices.
A long period of turbo-charged growth, led by China and India, has boosted
global energy demand, helping to drive crude to record highs above US$130 ($182)
a barrel. Metals and grains, most recently rice, have also been on a tear.
Producers of natural resources have spent a chunk of their windfalls on imports
from Asia, replacing demand from America that has been ebbing for more than a
year as the subprime mortgage meltdown ripples through the economy.
The United States, Europe and Japan still bought just over 40 per cent of Asian
exports in 2007, but that was down from nearly 50 per cent in 2000.

China cries 'Inflation!' but plays it cool

CHINA has said at every turn in the last half year that its top economic concern
is inflation, but don't expect much in the way of monetary policy to tame prices
unless they shoot up from their current levels.
Although inflation is skirting a 12-year high, it has been in the mid-8 per cent
range for a few months, and Beijing thinks salvation may be at hand with food
prices on the wane.
Officials are also wary of an overly aggressive drive against inflation that
would pile misery on manufacturers, already grappling with the global slowdown
and rising commodity costs.

The SICk Duo and the real reasons why Mokhzani must quit
http://rockybru.blogspot.com/2008/05/how-sic-k-is-azalina-and-ismail.html
The SIC belongs to UMNO now? That's what Azalina Othman and Ismail Sabri Yaakob,
our two ministers from Umno, seem to be saying. They said since Mokhzani has
quit Umno, he should also quit the Sepang International Circuit!
Blogger Apanama disagrees with the "SIC-k Duo". He said the SIC is not a
subsidiary of Umno and belongs to the Rakyat.
Read his full posting h e r e. Rizal Hashim also posted on this subject earlier,
here.
RM100 million annual budget, night races, and a new multi-million USD contract.
In reality, Azalina and Ismail's demand that Mokhzani quits SIC has little to do
with their loyalty to Umno.
The SIC is a gold mine that's about to get a lot bigger. Mokhzani has been
running the F1 races and the Grand Prixs on a budget of approximately RM100
million a year. Now, under the new contract that will come into effect in 2011
and stretches till 2015 with Bernie Ecclestone, the F1 boss, that budget is
about to get a whole lot bigger.

Fed Devt Dept Scrapped, Cabinet Committee On Illegal Immigrants Formed -
Abdullah
KOTA KINABALU, May 31 (Bernama) The 17-year wait by state government leaders
to scrap the Sabah Federal Development Department ended Saturday when Prime
Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced the good news.
Following the abolition with immediate effect, Sabah State Development Office
would handle the Prime Ministers special allocations and monitor implementation
and progress of federal government projects.
Abdullah, who met state government leaders and senior state government
officials, also announced the formation of a cabinet committee on illegal
immigrants to be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to
discuss and solve the perennial illegal immigrants problem in the state.
The committee, comprising several Sabah leaders, would seek solutions to the
problem, particularly foreigners holding the IMM13? a document in lieu of
passport issued by the Immigration Department to Filipino refugees which permits
them to remain in Sabah, he told a media conference.

The Perils of Assimilationist Politics

A quick look at the troubles in the predominantly Muslim-Malay provinces of
Southern Thailand which has been a troubled spot for the past four years at
least would point to a fundamental flaw in the line of thinking of the
powers-that-be in Bangkok. Having disregarded the historical factors that make
the four provinces of Patani, Jala, Satun and Narathiwat unique compared to the
rest of the country, successive governments in Thailand have tried to make the
Malay-Muslims of the south think of themselves as Thais, who are an ethnically
different people with a language, culture, religion and history of their own.

The hypocritical Tun DrM
http://altsheep.blogspot.com/2008/06/hypocritical-tun-drm_01.html
|||Today 01:28 AM|Sheep (noreply@ blogger.com)
The recent piece by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad "The Racist Card" is definitely one
to ponder. DrM starts by claiming that those fighting for the minority races in
Malaysia, who happens to call their Malay-ultra counterparts racists, to be
themselves racists as well. The reasoning is pretty simple - they took a racial
stand. However, in claiming that, Tun DrM has basically committed hypocrisy, for
he himself have done exactly what his opponents have done - while HINDRAF
proponents claim that Malay-ultras are racists, DrM claims that HINDRAF
proponents are racists. To DrM's reasoning, the HINDRAF proponents are racists
because they are taking a racial stand. His...
