Oswiecim, Poland -- In an emotional moment on Thursday, a German train
approached the site of the Auschwitz death camp at the end of a six month
journey of Holocaust commemoration across the German rail system.

A group of 70 young Germans were among 200 Germans and Poles who later
gathered at an old rail platform at the death camp where brutal Nazi guards
once herded Jews out of railway cattle trucks and sent them to their deaths
in the "gas ovens."

"We have no words. We are looking appalled at thousands of suitcases,
toothbrushes and shoes," said Luise Rauer, an 18-year-old Berlin schoolgirl,
on behalf of the youth party at the ceremony.

"The Nazis tried to kill everyone they thought was not worth living. They
failed."

Auschwitz II, the death camp outside the modern Polish town of Oswiecim, has
been preserved as a memorial to Holocaust victims, with the baggage found
when the camp was liberated by the Red Army as a symbol of the dead.

The memorial train, two veteran carriages containing pictures and mementoes
of child Holocaust victims, completed its journey into Oswiecim's main
station on a day of hope, the 63rd anniversary of the May 8, 1945 downfall
of the Nazis and Victory in Europe (VE).

A task to find a kosher chicken in Marrakech caused a stir on the
BBC's version of The Apprentice this week, when the self-declared Jewish
contestant headed straight for a halal butcher to procure the poultry.

The luckless Michael Sophocles came in for a blasting from the
competition's businessman overlord, Sir Alan Sugar, himself Jewish, who
questioned Sophocles' religious background after the contestant said that he
did not know the meaning of the word "l'chaim."

"In your CV, what's the first thing you wrote on it?" Sugar demanded
of Sophocles. "What did you say in there, you're a good Jewish boy? Is that
right?"

Upon receiving an ambiguous response, Sugar told him: "If you're
unsure you can always pull your trousers down and we can check."

"Is it right you went to a Muslim halal butcher and asked him to get
you a kosher chicken? and he actually made a prayer over it?" Sugar asked.

When Sophocles replied in the affirmative, Sugar continued: "Are you
having a laugh or what? I don't know why you didn't go the whole hog and
find a Roman Catholic priest to take the butcher to confession."

Now that a few weeks have passed, we are better able to assess the
significance of former U.S. president Jimmy Carter's report,
subsequent to his meeting with Khaled Meshal, that "Hamas will accept
any agreement negotiated by Mr. [Mahmoud] Abbas and Prime Minister
Ehud Olmert of Israel, provided it is approved in a Palestinian
referendum."

This may sound significant, but neither the Olmert government nor the
Bush administration responded to the news with cartwheels. They might
explain their lack of enthusiasm in this way:

Hamas has made similar declarations in the past, but has always said
that a referendum must include the Palestinian diaspora worldwide, and
it continues to say it will not recognize Israel and will insist on
the right of return for refugees. So any Olmert-Abbas deal will be
opposed by Hamas, and will likely lose in the referendum.

Who is right here? Did Carter focus world attention on an overlooked
but major opportunity to end the conflict? Or is this just more
worthless, even dangerous, Hamas rhetoric?

'I was at Israel's founding'
Mr Handler was told to keep his invitation a secret

When the State of Israel was declared on 14 May 1948, some 200
dignitaries were invited to the ceremony, held at the Museum of Art in
Tel Aviv. Of those present, only one, Arieh Handler, now 93, is known
to still be alive. Here he recounts his personal recollections of that
historic day.

I lived in a place not far from Israel's first prime minister, David
Ben Gurion, and I got the invitation from someone who came on a
motorbike.He handed it to me and did not say another word. I asked him
what it was, and he said he was not allowed to tell me.
At the same time I got a telephone call, from one of Ben Gurion's
staff, and they asked me not to tell anybody that I had got this
invitation. But of course in a way that was rubbish because a few
hours later everybody knew about it.

The roadways around Kremlin had to be renforced in order for this multiple
